    Heat and ammo quality?

    Hello,

How much doe's the hot weather we're haveing affect stored ammo? I just know to keep ammo off the ground in as cool and dry an area as possible. However, with temperatures as high as they are recently, without air conditioning just about everyplace is getting very warm to hot. How will the heat affect the ammo quality?

    Thank you,

    Joe

Don't worry about this heat. The amount heat that will damage the rounds will cause them to go off first. keep them dry and out of the sun and it will be fine. you will dies from the heat before the ammo even starts to have issues.

If your not its a good idea to store the ammo in sealed ammo cans. I noticed something very interesting on my trip into the Nevada desert this week. The AR was veryyy hot coming out of the trunk, and after firing was basically impossible to hold. I took a round out of the chamber and the bullet tips came out purple. Must have been hot in there .

I'll post pictures and tell more about the trip in another thread.
      Please, calm down.

Shooting in different temperature affects accuracy. I use Extreme powders to combat this. They seem to be impervious to the weather swings I am used to 30 degrees to 110 degrees. I know that was not the question but it really helps the hunting crowd to know this.

I burned my fingers a little while loading mags last weekend. The ammo worked fine though. I keep my ammo in ammo cans out in the garage.

I wish I had room to keep ammo in the house, but my place is too small. I keep everything in sealed ammo cans in the garage, beneath my workbench.

I was worried this week that things might be too hot in there. The air was around 107, but down on the concrete floor it was a cool 80.

What's this about not keeping it on the ground?

I think the advice against keeping it on the ground is more about moisture. When you have a pipe burst or something like that, where do you think the water goes first?

                Waterlogged ammo isn't cool.

Gotcha. I better check the seals on my ammo cans. ;-)
