AR newb learns the hard way....

Sighted in my new AR today.

Wasted 60 rounds turning the turrets not knowing what was going on.

A little background, I shoot 22lr. I'm used to holdovers. This is how I learned to shoot. I expect bullets to drop. Like so,



After much frustration, I downloaded Ballistic AE and quickly taught myself the basics. Then I got this.



Da hell? The bullets keep going up until 225 yards? Ya learn something new everyday.

In the end, the WOA build was putting Wolf Gold into the same hole at fity yards. That made my day.

I did that. But if your dialing holdovers as you go further, when in fact you should be dialing hold under (?) then one can get lost fast. Add to that that at a certain point, you switch up back to holdovers.

It was really windy today and the target frames were waving like flags. Without the chart, I was surely lost.

I do this after an AR barrel change.It works!

It's hard to get lost with a 100 yard zero. It's all down hill after that.

Yep. This is what the older gentleman who runs the Piru range did for me after he watched me be burn a good 50 rounds and still keep messing with the dials on the scope. And he did an amazing job too. It is dead nuts at 100 yards now. I do not change the scope settings much. Especially on a .22 or a .223. Once set, it is set for what ever distance it is set for. I just guesstimate the hold over for different distances and that works very well. Keep in mid the point of aim and point of impact is different as soon as you change ammo. No need to mess with a scope that is zeroed.

You speak truth. Bear in mind, I was zeroing the rifle and scope. Since I was compensating for bullet drop, I was not helping myself. I didn't help that I was using 6 inch targets that I use for my 22s.

Once I figured out what was going on, it was easy from there

glad you are getting good results from the WOA barrel... Some match Ammo and or home rolled reloads will tighten things up even more

Looking forward to it. I've got a few hundred Norma Match in 77gr SMKs ready. I'm just zeroing the rifle at this point.

Btw, I ran the 77gr SMKs through the ballistic app and even those have an entirely different flight path.

It works very well for me with my bolt actions, but not ideal for the AR using 6 inch targets. With an AR, get a large target. The full size ones.

I guess for experienced shooters, you all know this. I just learned it today.

If I zero at 50, I have to put in 14 clicks of up elevation to hit a 1 inch target at 25 yards. But to hit a 1 inch target at 100, I have to put in 5 clicks of down elevation. To hit the same target at 150, I put in one less click of down elevation from the dope at 100.

That's what got me. Not used to that kinda of bullet path. Easy enough to walk in a 22lr round. But the AR was counter intuitive at these ranges. I was hitting, the target frames. But what I was doing was gathering dope on my rifle for 1 inch targets at various ranges. I get that some don't like turning turrets. But this build is exactly for that.
