I know I know when I left California I sent my last post good bye on Calguns. However I ran into a little problem while stationed here in Florida. I am a huge 1911 fan and I was able to trade for a Springfield 1911-A1 in 38 Super (No DROS fees), and I purchased some Foichi 129gr and it would not group very well. Does anyone have experience with the Springfield 1911-A1 in 38 super? I was told that the 38 super can be finicky about certain loads, but once you find the right one it's a tack driver. Any hints that can point me in the right direction?

Many years ago a friend had a 1911 Colt 38 Super. It wouldn't shoot well with any factory ammo availabe at time. I slugged his bore, and then loaded him up some .358" 125 gr Sierra HPs and it tightened right up. The next week he bought his own reloading set up.

How well do you shoot with other 1911s?? How does it not group well? have you shot the gun off a stand to make sure it is the gun's fault??
It may be a custom job or a Bubba job (most likely) and not an original gun from Springfield.
Regardless, Call Springfield and they can tell you what the serial number represents as a gun and go from there.
You want a home remedy, Take it to your gunsmith. There should be plenty of them in Florida.Comment

Hit up the 1911 forum.

It might be some work but have you slugged the barrel and determined the true bore diameter?
The 38 super is a great round... If you have grouping issues with a variety of factory loads, I would check the barrel diameter....
Some 38 supers were match quality and some were built to be sold in Mexico where common military calibers were prohibited....Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I'd suggest some of this: http://atlantaarms.com/ammo/elite-ammo/handgun/
If that doesn't shoot, I'd suggest having a 1911 'smith check out the barrel fit. Where in FL are you ?Anyone press will hear the fat lady sing.

Thanks for the info. I will try your suggestions and let you know how it goes. Every Springfield I have is a tack driver except this one. But it has only had this one load shot through it. It's fun to shoot and I don't want it to become a safe queen.Comment
