I was away on business for months in Asia, Canada, and Australia. I came home to LA in between just to check on my place. Then I was off again, I was gone for around 5 months without visiting any of my local watering holes (bars, Starbucks, etc.).
I know the people that work at the establishments rather well and they know I am into firearms. They have never spoken to me about firearms before, but I walked into a local coffee shop that has free WiFi (I go on gun sites there sometimes) and I walked in and around 5 employees come up to me and ask to speak with me in private, I know them all by first name and we are all on a very friendly basis.
At this point I am kind of weirded out - they take me to the side and say, "Hey nice to see your back in town, we were all talking and we decided with Obama and getting elected and the economy that it would be a wise idea to pick up some guns. We wanted your opinion on what to get and what stores in this area have good prices?"
I was amazed, most of these people have never even held a gun before and they were young, 19-25 years of age. I gave them a crash course in firearms, told them to go to the range and take a lesson or two, it is also an enjoyable sport, explained the difference between a shotgun, rifle, and pistol, told them to follow the law and read up on the laws, those sorts of things - I am by no means a professional so I did not tell them to go out and buy _______, also a gun is only as good as its shooter.
I was really shocked, because they would engage me in every other kind of conversation from sex to shoes - but they would always avoid the topic of firearms.
Sign of the times I guess, its nice to see this in LA with the youth - at least some people are thinking ahead for the 'just in case'.

It seems people are preparing for absolute catastrophy. The comments we hear are about how the economy is collapsing, people can't get jobs, home invasion robberies are now occurring in "safe" neighborhoods, etc. These are comments from people we haven't seen before, not our regulars. One guy came in and said he needed a pistol, rifle, shotgun, a case of ammo for each, and training for all three. He didn't care about cost, his major concern was being prepared.
