    Should I get snap caps?

    Hi all,

I'm going to be receiving soon both a SIG SP2022 and a Mosin 91/30. To familiarize myself with each of them, I do intend to spend a lot of time not only stripping and re-assembling them at least a few times at first, plus to clean and lubricate them.

I would also like to familiarize myself with the trigger on both as well as cycling each. I've heard that dry firing can be detrimental to some firearms, so would snap caps be a good investment to help make sure I don't damage anything?

    Thanks.

Yes get snap caps for two reasons. One for dry fire practice at home. Two for learning to deal with anticipation when shooting. Load your magazine with a few real rounds and a few snap caps at random. When you get to the snap caps you'll see what you're doing wrong. Great tool

I use dummy rounds (not snap caps) to function check my firearms. I can check that the rounds feed and extract properly. In my opinion gun owners should have dummy rounds for all calibers of guns that they own. You should never, ever do a function check with live ammo.

That's not really much of a function check. Manual cycling the action is very different from shooting it.

Dummy round/snap cap, what's the difference?

I see them as one in the same, amI missing something?

Stupid question. When I function check my guns (new guns) I do it at the range. I don't load snap caps, rack the slide and say "yup this guns works."

Dummy rounds are not designed to be impacted by the firing pin. Snap caps have a spring or elastomer part that gives when impacted by the firing pin.

I have dummy rounds (no primer). Fill the primer pocket with hot glue gun. Scrape excess off with razor blade. Done. Now you can dry fire with them.

Always get snap caps/dummy rounds...whatever. I never dry fire my guns except my Glocks before cleaning.
