FWIW (and I'm no expert), I bought a Colt Mustang back in 1992. I placed in it a nightstand safe that found its way in a desk drawer underneath stacks of papers. It sat there until 2012 - never gave the gun a second thought (bought just before the Rodney King riots).
Took the gun out of the safe and looked as new the day I bought it (as it should - I never shot it). Didn't place any gel or 'rust inhibitor' materials in the safe. It is the type of safe that a plastic screwdriver can pry open.
What I'm getting at is don't overthink storage (for 3 years). Being a bit (but not much) smarter now than I was 24 years ago, *I* would put a liberal amount of oil on all surfaces and place it in a gun rug w/ a couple gel packs inside your safe. *I* would advise lifting the safe off the floor a couple inches (if not already bolted to the structure) to avoid moisture..

i would diassemble what i can , man. then lightly clean and then oil all parts. Wrap in plastic and place in safe the way you described, probably ok. make sure safe is in an area that has good air flow. not some stuffy basement with no dry air flow.--------------------------------------------------

Cosmoline, T9 or is it P9? Whatever they use the replace cosmoline now... a couple recent threads show wd-40 specialist and hornady one shot to be great.
Maybe you could vacuum seal them after coating with a rust inhibitor in a co2/argon/nitrogen or whatever gas purge.
I had a rifle in a soft padded case with regular old wd-40 on it for 5 years. In a wet/damp basement. Only rust on it was a fingerprint (my stupidity).
I think level A packing (indefinite, all weather storage/transport) is cosmoline or the like, vacuum sealed, put in a cardboard box (with some paper buffer), and then stacked up in a plywood crate. And this is supposed to pretty much last indefinitely, excluding excessive rain.

my dad's 22 bolt action hung on a wall at my Grandmothers house for 30+ years.
I pulled it off the wall and shot it. No rust, no issues.
Unless you live by the beach or in a swamp, I wouldn't worry much about it.Comment

I have a roll, which I have slowly used over the years. I put pieces in with all my ammo cans, and wrap handguns in it too...Works like a champ..
Most firearms manufacturers use it in their gun boxes to prevent rust...Poke'm with a stick!

I saw these on Brownells, rated for 5-20 years storage, giving you some leeway in case some kawawii Japanese chick managed to retain you longer than expected.

I store them lube free and bone dry. They are always rust free.
Been using these for years on a Parker SG and Remington M37 + few others I don't shoot much at all. Check them once a year and still perfect.Comment
