+1 for a AR style rifle , maybe in .308.

If Newsome becomes Governor or a Democrat a president you're going to see it's market value increase.
(At that point you can sell yours and get a bolt action rifle if you want to. in the meantime you've had plenty of fun & training with it.)

Also, apparently "a penny for your thoughts" is just not enough in this economy...Or maybe it's overpaying.
      :-)

I would vote buy rather than build. You can get a very nice AR for $1000. Building is fine if you are going for a specific purpose build, but starting with a factory build is very easy as well.

M&P makes a very nice entry platform that you can build upon.

        Good luck.

        more good suggestions..

a savvy shopper might even be able to swing a S&W M&P15 and a S&W 22A for not too far north of the $1k budget

I appreciate all the advice thus far. In fact I went over to the LGS earlier this afternoon to fondle a few ARs and see what bolt rifle offerings they had. Associate behind the counter kept recommending the M&P15 Sport 2 saying that for $700 can't go wrong. Apparently there's a waiting list, as the first 5 of its kind were sold the very same day they arrived at the store.

Some of you brought up the idea of getting a .22, which eventually I will get around to, but at this very moment, I'm either going to get an AR or bolt rifle. The only thing keeping me from decisively pulling the trigger on a bolt rifle is the fact that ARs are stupid cheap right now, and I don't want to miss this opportunity to snatch one up while costs are low.

On the other hand, acquiring a long-range rifle would moreso fit the bill in my ongoing effort to round out my collection.

          Decisions...decisions...

I've taken fighting shotgun/pistol/rifle courses using same and my plan this year is to continue taking re-quals to stay sharp.

As of late, I've been considering either an entry-level AR or WASR, but I'm not dead set on either one just yet. My budget is $1k. Just looking to add to my collection at this point.

            What would you guys recommend?

            TIA
You have an AK but not an AR, shame on you, to make up for it buy an AR and a 1911.

How about a AR in 6.5 Grendel. it is an accurate round, even at 1k yards. And capable of taking medium to large game, if you are interested in hunting. You don't have to build an AR, but you could buy a complete upper in 6.5 and build the lower, which is stupid simple to do. http://www.radicalfirearms.com/category-s/1856.htm

Get a .22lr rifle and pistol.

Use the rest for ammo and training.

Lol if you have a paper clip and a chanel lock you can build a striped lower it's the way I did before I saw someone use a hammer and punches. But I did pick up a universal ar tool to make sure that I had the stock on and it was cheep like $15-20.

Shoot an AR first and see how you like it, if you decide to get one, build one from a stripped lower (if your handy - you just need simple tools and it's not hard) and you could build it like how you want it. A complete AR build could run you around $600 (as of 1/23/2016)...

Consider a 1911 45ACP clone. Also, single action revolvers will certainly make you happy. How about an Old Model Ruger Blackhawk? Or a Vaquero? And you will eventually need a .22 pistol of some sort. And a .22 rifle.

And please, for the Love of God, don't say "Mossy". It's a Mossberg shotgun. A decent, honest shotgun that deserves your respect. "Mossy" is just half a step away from "Shotty". I know you mean well and are a little new to all of this but really. There are certain standards.
