Yes, but there definitely is a preference for veterans for most jobs because of specific experience and clearance requirements. If you are otherwise qualified though, don't let that stop you from applying.

Kind off-topic but in the same vein- I have a friend who is a commercial welder who did a 90 day gig in Africa welding on a gold mine and he was paid $1000 a day ($100 an hour for a 10 hour shift) with weekends "off" if he wanted. Which he never did because you had to stay in the compound or go into a crappy little town, so he just worked most of the time. Made a decent amount of cash in a short time, and they wanted him to go to Australia when the contract was done. Only problem he had was that its basically like being in jail, just with internet and booze.

Call him run-like-hell-when-shtf-guy or dial-911-guy but NEVER call an unarmed man "Security".

There's some new base construction going on now in Iraq, so I think we'll see some new opportunities opening up in a few months, if you're interested in going to ISIS land.
I've deployed 14 times since 2005 as a contractor. Only downside is missing my family but I may do it again. Can't beat the pay but it was better before.

My old Platoon Commander did it and even wrote a book on all the inside tracks to become one. It's on the Internet. I came close to doing it but i started making pretty good money here.

Nobody disclosed their mission or classified materials, other than compensation. Which is something talked about in the open anyway. All you need is to know someone that's already IN. Just my 0.02.

My cousin was offered a job in one of the friendly oil countries to train mechanics on taking care of the fighter jets. He said his friends did it for awhile. It is all prince's playing with the jets and the mechanics don't want to learn so the contractors just do all the work maintaining multimillion dollar toys. He is almost at 20 years so he might try it when he retires from service.
