    Where do I find a mil-spec 1911?

OK, so I want to find the most honest-to-goodness, no frills attached, your grandaddy packed this in WW2, unaltered and entirely mil-spec version of the 1911, the bug has kind of bit me. However, I cannot seem to find a version that doesn't have some altering done to it in some small way. Who makes one just like they came back in the day? Anyone? Anyone?

I think the SA GI 1911 Series would be the closest production model you could get.

Otherwise, try for an old one on Gunbroker. They can be pretty expensive, obviously, and most that I've seen aren't in good shape.

Springfield or Colt. Springfield has the GI which is truer to John Moses Browning's design in that it's a truly unaltered 1911. The Springfield Mil Spec has the flared and lowered ejection port and high profile 3 dot sights. Colt's new offerings are series 80 1911s. All of the above are Cali legal by the way. The S.A. GI go for around 500 - 600, the Milspec anywhere from 600 - 750. The Colt Government 1991 A1 is well over 750.

If you get the Springfield GI be sure to get the blued model.

I dislike advertising online, but since you're looking for a specific item:

ASC in San Diego has a handful of SA GIs in stock right now at $599. That's toward the high end of acceptable pricing, but they had to go through a middleman (C&S) to get them so it's not them jacking up the price intentionally. All the Brazilian Springfield's have been scarce and rather hard to get lately, so if you want one you may want to go check them out and jump on one.

ASC also had a VERY nice GI 1911 (Colt 1919 military production) that is in great condition (looked like it MAY have been all original minus an armory reparkerization). I'm not sure if that one is still there, and given it's shape and age they were asking around $1k for it (not a steal but not too high either).

If that is indeed what you're looking for swing by and check them out.

Like others have said, the Springfield GI.45 is the closest to the real deal that you are going to find. Get the parkerized model. I got mine for $410 new a couple years ago and love it. The Springfield Mil Spec 1911 is not truly mil spec. Here is what the GI.45 looks like…

Edit: this is a 1911A-1… if you want a true pre WWII 1911 without the beveled finger groove behind the trigger and with the flat mainspring housing you need to find an original. IIRC the A-1 cam out in around the start of WW-II but a lot of old ones were still in service. Someone correct me if my timeline is off.

                SA G.I. 1911 A1

You might check with Rick at Fine Firearms in La Mesa. He had one in stock recently for a bit over 500 recently unless he sold it at Del Mar over the weekend. Good luck to you!

Hmmmph, interesting. Now, might I ask why no one makes an original mil-spec 1911? One would think that would be in demand. What about the Colt 1991, anyone have an opinion on that?

I bought the parked SA GI also for the same reasons as the OP and was really in love with its looks, but all the sharp edges made it painful to shoot and would sometimes even break the skin between my thumb and index finger.

Also, it would consistently fling brass at my face, this is what really bothered me, because I noticed that after shooting a few mags through the GI I would develop a flinch.

Everyone I'd ask, would tell me to alter the gun by adding a beavertail and lowering the ejection port, but I couldn't bare to change it's looks.

Eventually I traded it off, which suprizingly I don't regret.

It was beautiful though and very reliable, I wouldn't mind owning another one but I probably wouldn't shoot it.
