    How many firearms are in Califonia?

    How many firearms are in California? Here is a list of DROS records from 1972-2014. From 1972-1990 only handgun DROS records were tabulated, from 1991-2014 Rifles were also tabulated. I believe the number recorded represents only 50% of the firearms in the state.

    *1972 = 190,335
    *1973 = 192,108
    *1974 = 234,691
    *1975 = 231,916
    *1976 = 204,658
    *1977 = 225,412
    *1978 = 258,485
    *1979 = 268,447
    *1980 = 325,041
    *1981 = 371,160
    *1982 = 311,870
    *1983 = 268,462
    *1984 = 275,882
    *1985 = 293,624
    *1986 = 266,480
    *1987 = 273,628
    *1988 = 291,171
    *1989 = 333,069
    *1990 = 330,295
    1991 = 489,433
    1992 = 559,608
    1993 = 642,197
    1994 = 599,672
    1995 = 411,668
    1996 = 353,872
    1997 = 355,136
    1998 = 342,540
    1999 = 513,418
    2000 = 386,210
    2001 = 353,722
    2002 = 352,425
    2003 = 290,376
    2004 = 315,065
    2005 = 344,847 = 87**
    2006 = 375,573 = 74**
    2007 = 370,628 = 52**
    2008 = 425,244 = 48**
    2009 = 483,872 = 45**
    2010 = 498,945 = 58**
    2011 = 601,243 = 44**
    2012 = 817,738 = 37**
    2013 = 960,179 = 28**
    2014 = 931,037 = 40**
    = 16,921,382 513**

    *Handguns only
    **Number of annual Homicides from rifles
    Now compare the numbers to the number of Homicides in the state for the same years... the percentage is infinitesimal.

    That's transfers.

    A PPT, for example, would not be a net increase in guns in the state. And I've not seen any breakout of PPTs in those stats.

    And then there are all the guns moved here before the new resident stuff, and guns owned here from, say, 1899 thru 1971, and the long guns purchased 1972 to 1990.

    No solid numbers because of that. My guess: twice that ~17 million.

          34 million guns in state? Sounds pretty high for a state where the liberals outnumber the conservatives by about 2-1. You have only 38 million total people in state, 25% are under 18 and can't own guns so that means about 28 million people owning 34 million guns?

          Maybe in Texas I might believe it, but no way kali. You probably have at least 18 million of the 28 million people here HATE guns.......

                  I believe that there are more guns than anyone can possibly imagine in this state.

                  Even if there were only ten million gun owners with a basic three gun accumulation that is 30 million guns.

                  There are a lot of collectors that own from three to thirty and some into the hundreds.

                  So what is the number we can agree on with so many gun accumulations by millions of gun owners?

                  Think about it!

                    There are probably a bunch of firearms forgotten in homes that were dad's or granddad's hunting guns or nightstand revolver.

                      Great minds think alike...

                      Another stat I heard but haven't certified, the average California firearms owner owns 3.4 firearms.

                        Seems a little low to me - I bought almost as many guns as were listed for each year, and that was just me....

                          I'd say that the 34 million number is on the low side of a guesstimate. Unless you are going with in private ownership only, and even then it's going to be off with no real way to verify.

                          Also don't fall in to the Homicide trap that is thrown out all the time by the anti crowd. Those number's include suicides, justified, and accidents. The true number of murder's would be much smaller, and harder to find.

                            I wish there were 34 million handgun owners. That would be much better.

                              Invite your non-gun friends to go shooting with you So far, I went from having a circle of friends who were scared to death of guns to having a circle of friends where all we talk about is what we're buying next. Same people in the circle, by the way.

                              Of course, it helps that I have my own gun range, but I'm sure there are plenty of gun ranges out there that are friendly, non-anal, and comfortable. The environment is key - if people are uncomfortable with guns, they'll be super uncomfortable in a non friendly environment.
