As well, “9mm” could mean 9mm Kurz (.380ACP), 9x18 Makarov, 9x19 Para., or 9x21 Largo.
The 'common' 9mm handgun uses 9x19.

There are a lot of different 9mm handgun cartridges, and some of them are known by multiple names. Some examples are:

Of those, 9mm Luger (Parabellum/9x19) is the most common and what people usually mean when they refer to 9mm.

38 Super falls between the 9x21 and the Largo for case lenght.

Good breakdown. I'd only add that 9mm Kurz is also known as 9mm Corto. Both of which are .380.

                          1. 9mm Luger = 9x19, 9mm Parabellum, and 9mm NATO (which is loaded to a higher pressure than the usual 9MM Luger, i. e., roughly equivalent to 9mm Luger +P)

                          2. 9mm Kurz = 9x17, .380 ACP

                          3. 9mm Markarov = 9x18 (and using a larger diameter bullet than other 9mm cartridges, 0.365 inch vs. 0.355 inch)

                          4. 9x21

                          5. 9mm Largo = 9x23, 9mm Bergmann–Bayard, 9mm Bayard Long

                          6. 9x25 = 9mm Dillon

Of those, 9mm Luger (Parabellum/9x19) is the most common and what people usually mean when they refer to 9mm.
Wasn't there also a 9mm "Hirtenberger" ammo for sub machine guns??

Beats me. I wasn't trying to put together a comprehensive list -- just an illustrative one.

Yes, but it isn't a different size than 9mm Para. From 2004
Washington--The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has been
advised by Hirtenberger AG, Hirtenberg, Austria, that certain 9X19 mm
caliber ammunition produced by Hirtenberger is unsafe for use in any
                              handgun.

The ammunition, designated L7A1 and produced ln the years 1990 through
1992, was produced for the British Ministry of Defense specifically for
use in submachineguns under adverse conditions. The ammunition was loaded to produce pressures far in excess of that intended for use in handguns.
"Hirtenberger" is a manufacturer, like "Remington".
