A pre 29 would be the most desirable, the rarest would be the 29-1

So I would rank them in order like this as far as my personal diserablity

    Pre 29
    29-1
    29
    29-2 S prefix
    29-2 N prefix

anything past a 29-2 is less desirable, actually I probalby wouldn't buy anything newer than a -2

I have heard all kinds of stories about what was used in the "Dirty Harry" films, some stories even claim a .45 was used because it looked more meanacing while viewing it from the receiving end.

Not sure of the exact year. Here's a picture of it from the NRA Museum.

                Wow, thanks for the pic.

I wonder what that shield reads on the grip.

I will bet it's not for sale. Or at a reasonable price.

Have never seen or heard of a 5" 29. Don't think it exists except for maybe a S & W custom shop job.
                      I've got -2's, -4's -5's in 6 1/2, and 8 3/8 brl. 629's in a 5 in. Mod 57 nickled in 8 3/8's.
Dirty Harry's gun was a parts gun made especially for the movie by S&W and is 6 1/2 " brl.

There were a guns made for the movie. Some were in the movie, some were given by S&W to the above the line people involved with the movie. A friend of mine owns one of them. He traded a registered magnum for it. To the best of my knowledge the gun is unfired.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

S&W did produce a limited run of 5 in. Model 29 around the time they were all 4 screw guns, I think the number was either 250 or 500 units total. This was an accomodation for a S&W distributer that placed the order sometime in the late '50s or early '60s. The guns are out there and every once in a while one will show up for sale, and they are up there in price! Check out this website for more S&W info; http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve

Some of the contemporary Performance Center models may have value in the future and they are made with care and premium parts.

I'm also preferential to low production custom order 1990-ish M29 distributor guns from S&W.
