Why do handguns go off roster???

Hey guys I was wondering what makes a gun go off roster? I know some guns are not able to be sold in California because they don't send them for testing to the DOJ. But a gun is available in our state and then the next year it is not?? Why??

Yup, this ^^

If CAL DOJ determines that a gun has changed (new manufacturing process, design change, etc) then they will rule that it needs to be submitted for re-testing.
If that happens the gun will not pass the test because no one is doing or can do microstamping. Since microstamping is a requirement for new guns then we have a gun that drops out of California.

If that were to happen, the gun wouldn't even get to the testing part - mag disconnect, loaded chamber indicator, and microstamping are 'gating factors' to get into the testing process.

Lots of guns are being manufactured by so many brands. You can compare the situation with today's smartphones. Hundreds of mobiles are coming and going every year with same features altogether. Unless one's manufacturing is stopped, other's manufacturing cannot be started.

This could NOT be further from the truth.

See Librarians answer. Lots of top selling guns are off roster because the manufacturers refuse to spend millions of dollars to tool up a new variant just for one state - a state that insists upon the implementation of technology that cannot be reliably achieved (micro-stamping).

But I would think with the market of California being so big company's would jump on the change to sells there guns here. People in California are going to buy handguns so I would think it would be in there best interest to comply

Yes, they would jump on the chance if they could, but new guns cannot legally be added to the roster. (Due to requiring micro-stamping, which is a technology that doesn't exist...)

From reading posts in the handgun section it seems many Calguns members don't want a magazine disconnect, don't like the looks of the labeling of a chamber load indicator, and don't want microstamping on their guns out fear, however how improbable and unlikely, that some criminal or gang member is going to pick up discarded brass from their gun and leave it a crime scene. And many people outside of California don't want those "features" either.

Gun manufacturers don't think it is financially prudent to invest millions tooling up to make a California model for each one of their pistols that even Californians don't want to buy. The situation might change if the roster becomes significantly smaller than it is now, and California gun buyers become more desperate and are forced to be less picky than they are now.

Ronald Reagan was into it too. The Black Panthers were parading around the California Capitol in protest of something, and it PO'd Reagan to no end. He apparently set in motion a few regulations that have since snowballed with mighty pushes from the Union fueled Democrat legislative brothel that Sacramento has become. And yep, Arnie sold us out too.
