Looking for some help on a gun sale

I live in WA state and my buddie who lives in CA is interested in one of my handguns thats not on the list of "approved" CA guns. How can I go about selling him the gun? Thank you all for your time!!

You can't. He needs to buy from a person in CA, be LEO or he needs to run an inter-familiar transfer.

I believe the transfer has to be from child to parent or parent to child. can't be sibling or cousin etc.

So lets say his dad (who lives in WA) has a pistol he (his son who lives in CA)is interested in thats not on the "approved" list can he (his dad) send it to him via FFL dealers or does his Son have to come to WA and pick it up?

im not familiar with what WA state transfer rules apply, but since the son is not a resident of WA, he probably can't go to an FFL there

This is how id do it to cover my A**

1. son travels to WA
2. Son and father fill out CA intra-familial form
3. son receives signed and notarized letter from father stating he gifts these guns with the following serial numbers
4. son travels back to CA with firearms
5. son goes straight to FFL as soon as reasonably possible with firearms, note, and form
6. son asks ffl to transfer firearms as gift exempt as mentioned Here.

No, no, no. You can't do any of this.

The gun can't go from you to your friend because federal law says it has to go through an FFL in California, who will nix the sale because the handgun isn't on the roster.

It can't go intrafamilial because California law says you can't use FFL-exempt transactions to accomplish a transfer that would otherwise require an FFL.*

Also, it sounds like the three-way intrafamilial transaction could potentially constitute a straw purchase, which would likely implicate you, your buddy and his dad in a federal felony.

Tell your buddy to be patient and scan the marketplace here until the gun he wants comes up for sale within driving distance. Then he can purchase it via PPT, which is roster-exempt.

*Withdrawing the strikethru; this California law wouldn't apply to the father in Washington, nor does the plain text appear to affect a purchaser or the FFL in this scenario.

This is all wrong. Assuming this transaction is otherwise legal (which it's not), Dad must either ship the handgun to an FFL in California or bring it there himself. The California intrafamilial form is only for in-state transfers that don't require an FFL; for out-of-state transfers, the FFL paperwork serves the purpose.

Really, folks - the interstate-transfer-must-use-an-FFL has been law since 1968.
