A wicked new AR case for me...and my .22 AR!
So I started with this:
And ended up with this:
I am going to switch out the blue foam for the better charcoal foam. I just used the cheaper stuff to map it out.
What I learned so far:
-It's not easy to use an electric knife to cut straight lines in foam.
-Measure twice, cut once.
-Don't glue anything together until you're positive it's set up the way you want.
-Plan ahead! Map out your cuts well before you cut.
-Measure the thickness of what you're going to insert fasteners into (walls of case to hold the velcro straps not pictured). And make sure the fasteners are the correct length.
-Little washers to keep the screw heads from tearing through the Velcro.
-Cut less material than you think you need to, you can always take more off.
-Take your time.
So after the learning curve, I'm going to get a better way to cut the foam, possibly make a hot knife, or get one of those little power scroll saws (if I can find one cheap enough).
Next is gonna be trying to find some cases of various sizes at a decent price and start making different kinds. i.e. guitar, viola, cello, etc. And some kind of locking system as the case doesn't have a lock.
List of materials:
Violin case (free from a close friend)
Fasteners (free from my stash of leftover screws, nuts and bolts)
Electric knife ($20)
Foam ($20 from a local fabric store. Although I expect the cost to increase when I get the better foam in the right size.)
Velcro ($2 or so a yard)
Locking clasp ($???)
So if you have an old instrument case (hard cases are best, and must be of a suitable size to accommodate the gun(s) you desire to enclose) laying around, make your own...or give it to me!
