Best deer caliber for 10yr old son?

I'm looking at getting my son his first deer rifle. He's been training on a .22 bolt action Savage and my AR15 for the last year.

I've been thinking about starting him with a .243 , but not sure. Any suggestions or thoughts?

I'm impressed he passed hunter's safety on his own.

7mm-08 (reduced loads or not, 120 grain or less if not reduced loads), .257 R, .243, .308 reduced loads.

I'd stick with lighter rifles and light kicking cartridges, also a decent recoil pad and making sure the rifle fits him. Both of the latter go a long way towards mitigating recoil, and light rifles are easier for kids to carry.

See my post on your post in the hunting section.

6.5 Swede. Get a solid rifle for $300ish and buy an S&K scope mount. No gunsmithing required. Buy a cheap LER scope and you are good with laser accuracy and little recoil. If he is a smaller guy, I would buy the 96/38 carbine version. Howa also sells a modern bolt in 6.5x55. I own one in Stainless steel.

.243, ammo available at even the smallest sporting good stores, .25-06, flat shooting low recoil great round, 7mm-08, similar ballistics to .270 win but less felt recoil, ammo not as common on the shelf at the shops I frequent; .243 is good for ground hogs through deer, and is a keeper for a lifetime. After .22, my daughters moved to a .243 and loved it.

                      I would say .243 or 6.5G.

+1 for the 30-30. Everybody should own at least one.

My buddy just picked up a 300blkout ruger ranch for an awesome price and his kids have been tearin deer and pigs up with it.
