Substitute for utility bills?

I know that lease agreements, property deeds, C&R and other government issued licenses can be used to substitute the utility bills needed for the purchase of handguns, but I was wondering if there were any substitutes for the utility bills needed to purchase firearms as a permanent resident. I went to 3 different Big 5s and none of them would take a lease agreement or a notarized letter stating that I lived there along with the bills.

I am currently living at home until I am done with college so am I out of luck until I graduate and move out or become a citizen (Both around the same time in 2011)?

I would try going somewhere other than Big 5 if you are having problems. They are known for having their own set of made up rules.

You could also have your parents put your name down on a utility bill. It comes in handy for other things as well.

I see your going to college, does your school send any bills to your house with your name on it?

I just got a bill from my school a week ago for the spring semester. Would they take that?

The Big 5 managers told me that it had to be my name on the gas, water, or electric bill, no exceptions. I guess I'll just go somewhere else. Never thought buying my first gun would be so difficult.

Notarized lease agreement between your parents and yourself should be good, as i have used it to pick up a few handguns.

Every gun store I've been to has taken my lease agreement from the apartments that I live in, screw big 5.

the last time i was in big 5 i heard them tell a guy they would accept a fishing license .... you should try that

True. A fishing license is a state issued license and shows your address. same with huntin lic.

It would be very interesting to see what their answer is to why they will not accept a state issued license.

Because, as I understand it, you don't go to a state agency to get a fishing/hunting license so there is no state-oversight on it.

I could go to Wal-mart and give them any address and get a fishing license. How does tht establish residency to that address?

In fact, CADOJ specifically states that hunting/fishing licenses are not acceptable since they aren't gov issued.

Examples of documents that are NOT acceptable proof of residency:

Hunting or fishing license (these documents are not issued by the government).
Cellular phone bill.

Big 5 doesn't sell handguns. Actually, the OP is having to comply with "permanent resident" regulations that require showing 3? months residency to buy any firearm.

But apparantly some Big 5's want to require POR for citizens buying long guns, even though it isn't legally required.

I can confirm this. I was born in the US and Big 5 still wanted proof of residence when I went to get a Marlin 30/30. The clerk spat so many made up "laws" at me (she kept saying "that's the law", when it was more like "that's out policy" in regards to many things, not just POR), and displayed an obvious nervousness towards doing anything wrong and ending up in jail (even called corporate a few times to make sure everything she was doing was kosher) that I just complied and brought a lease agreement with me when I went to pick up the gun. Besides, she was being nice and it was more of a training issue than her trying to impose her own rules on me. Must suck to get paid minimum wage and know that a paperwork error could land you in jail.

I could make a whole thread on Big 5 issues if I wanted to... I'm sure some are good, but the ones around here the employees are either anti-gun or are ok with guns but so poorly trained that I almost feel sorry for them. I typically don't go in there anymore unless something is on sale or the local mom and pop places don't have it.

With that said, I'm thankful that Big 5 sells firearms. After all there are some seriously creepy / annoying privately owned gun stores. I just wish that the employees at Big 5 had better training and were screened a bit better as far as being ok with the things they sell.
