1 in 30 only applies to new guns purchased from a dealer. You can buy as many PPT's as you want, no limit.

1 in 30 also applies to used guns purchased from a dealer.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Not always. If the gun is on roster then we have the option of running it as a dealer sale and clicking used. This will make that used gun part of the 1 in 30. It all depends on how the FFL runs it.

While I think that the compliance with this may vary from shop-to-shop, there is an ATF mandate for shops to file a form 3310.4 for "The sale or disposition of two or more handguns must be reported if they occur at the same time, or within five consecutive business days of each other."

This form is probably submitted in the background by most shops, and the customer never knows about it. It is a form which legally must be submitted by the shop, but there is no additional "waiting period" or approval.

Some shops I have used are adverse to filling out and submitting this extra paperwork, so they attempt to make their customers wait 5 business days between 2 purchases, or between pick-ups. I don't know whether that is really kosher or not - I'm not a licensee.

Buying the guns at 2 different dealers would apparently obviate the need to file this extra form.

Just an FYI if you attempt to make both purchases the same day at the same shop.

I try to avoid triggering the mutiple handgun form. But I'm not so paranoid that if need be I won't purchase multiple handguns on same day. Usually it is something like two curio and relic handguns. If you are buying 10 FN 5.7's at a time that may draw interest and a visit from ATF.

1 in 30 counts for PPT or new/used handgun purchase in city of LA so stay out of LA for the deals.

And remember, while it is not usually the case, a person might sell a new gun PPT. New/used is not the distinguishing factor - 'who is selling the gun' is.

For buying purposes not legal, I consider all guns sold by an individual to be used.

                          I do!

I've PPT'd up to six guns with multiple sellers in one transaction. If I did them separate, it could have cost me an additional $125 in DROS fees for no reason.

what determines if a gun is still considered new?

example...once a car is registered, even if it's returned to the dealer it must be sold as "used"...even if it only has a couple of miles on it

how would someone selling a gun through PPT still have it considered "new"

I recently PPT'd 8 guns at one time. Nothing came of it. All were C&R type. The FFL even forgave some of the DROS fees since I bought so much and paid cash.
