Completed 80% ar15s & air travel

So I got tickets to seattle where some friends of mine just bought a house. The husband wants me to bring my ar15s so we can have a day in the woods shooting his ak and my ars. I have a serialized jd machine lower, and a the rest are 80% lowers that I made. I want to take my 7.62x39 pistol upper, and 5.56 pistol upper with their pistol lower I made back during sse, and my 5.56 carbine that is on an 80% arms billet lower.

Has anyone had any experiences flying with completed 80% firearms?

There was another thread awhile back on this I remember most people saying they wouldn't take the chance without serial numbers on them. I would agree with them. I can't remember if anyone had actually done it though. Is driving not an option?

If it's legal to do (build an 80% AR) then what would be the issue ?

By law they are not allowed to. Only the individual with the firearm can have the key/combo to the locked container. During check in they "inspect" the firearm. AKA the lady at the ticket counter has a mini heart attack while you show her the evil machine. Ammo must be in the original container. It can't be a loose ammo box- ammo that is separated into individual slots is what they are looking for.

I've flown with firearms, several of which were 80% lowers. Its not that big of a deal. Read all the safety rules, follow them, and you won't be bothered. I wouldn't fly all over the country 70 times a year with a machined 80% lower, but if it's for one trip north, you're probably fine. I've done it 6 times (3 trips) now.

The law doesn't say they can't inspect it only that they can't take the key. When I first started flying with firearms they would have me open the hardcase. Now, they just tape the declaration to the top and send me top TSA.

Most airlines have rules about how many guns you can bring, how much ammo, and rules regarding suppressors (must be in case with guns).

The "inspection" is just them (TSA) checking to see if it is unloaded.

Except you said, "by law they are not allowed to". Someone not experienced may read that and think the TSA can't inspect the firearms. Then they don't do their own research and fight the wrong fight with the TSA while trying to maintain their rights.

Wasn't trying to nitpick, only ensure clarity for those that don't know the rules. Hell, even most of the TSA and airline employees don't know the rules.

Don't worry about it. Follow the airline's policy about flying with with firearms and ammunition. They do not check a firearm's history or serial number, they only check it to make sure it is unloaded.

Cool, thanks for your experience. I will have to see how many I can cram in the case, but will have both serialized and the two 80s. I just wanted the peace of mind to know that I wasn't the first one to try to fly with an 80.

I've flown with guns a dozen times in the last two years and never had to do more than crack the case open far enough for the TSA guy to slip the "unloaded firearm" tag inside. Then lock it up good n tight and pick it up when it comes out of the conveyor. One tip- no one likes that guy who hovers at the place where the baggage dumps o to the conveyor. Be that guy. It's your gun in a very obvious gun case.

I flew from San Diego to san jose with my 80% 1911. I had no problems. They didn't even open the case. They just taped a note outside of the case and then had me put it inside my luggage.

No tag is put on outside of case with firearm visible to outside. Usually inside case inside suitcase.. Longuns inside case.You sign that is is unloaded and it goes inside. Lots of people including me have flown with 80% ers.

Any update to this with recent law changes. I have a hog hunt in Texas and I want to bring my ar10.
