What percentage of Calgun members are proficient with the fire arms they own?

What percentage of Calguns members are proficient with the firearms they own? Speaking for my self I am not proficient with any of the firearms I own. I can break them down , clean them, load them but I am not accurate. I installed bipods on all my AR'S and can't shoulder fire them so I could only shoot them prone or bench rested. On a on the move type situation I suck ! With my hand guns I suck! I guess I am admitting that I bought firearms solely on the purpose of buying everything before they banned what I wanted. I need to use my firearms more frequently and learn proper techniques from real people " not youtube videos " . How many other Calguns members can admit the same ?

Old problems are like dry poop, if you let the dry poop sit it doesn't smell but the minute you decide to stir the poop with a stick, the smell comes back. Moral of the story, Don't bring up old problems!

I cant shoot 2 inch groups at 25yards with my pistols but i can get all head shots at 10-15 yards. In a self defense situation in my apt thats success against a baddy.

Yeah, it's easy to buy all the gear. Harder to make time to practice and get some instruction.

Always add ammo to your total expenditure!

Project Appleseed is the bees knees in teaching rifle marksmanship at a super affordable rate! The info also translates well to pistol.

Proficiency has many components in both breath and depth. Don't discount your mechanical knowledge as having no proficiency at all.

That said, it's important to define the different categories and levels to have skill in. An example would be:

        Mechanical
        Marksmanship
        Defensive/tactical

A bullseye shooter may drill a quarter at 50yds off hand, but he/she may not necessarily have the mindset, dedication, or conditioning to survive a deadly, messy altercation.

I'm less of a collector/tinkerer, and more of a "maximize the use of what I have" kinda guy. At the end of the day, your honest self assessment is important, but more importantly, where do you want to be? What is your goal? From there, spend your time and money accordingly.

Best of luck and stay safe.
For every $1 spent on a firearm, you should spend $2 training with it.

^^^ Great post! And we need a definition OP, if we're going to be able to answer the question.

'Offer' ends 01/03/16 but Certificates are good FOREVER, No Expiration.

Appleseed fees for all adults (18 & over) are now $60.00 so here's your chance to get that friend or family member out to an Appleseed event and save 20% while giving the perfect gift for Christmas! This certificate has no expiration date. Come see what all the excitement is about! Learn the fundamentals needed to shoot a rifle accurately out to 500 yards. Hear the history of how traditional American rifleman skills were decisive during the Revolutionary War and how this uniquely American skill played a major role on April 19, 1775, the day of the "shot heard around the world".
Great opportunity IMO. The certs don't expire either, so pick a few up now and be ready to go at anytime.

With many years of successful hunting, shooting, cleaning, working on firearms and a couple of defensive encounters I will say I am good to go

                It's all about safety

One thing that helped me a lot was to get trained at a range, then take 2 Tactical Pistol courses. I am not more accurate, but am a lot more comfortable, which translates into safety.

Standing at a range and blasting away for hours with a RO breathing over your shoulder doesn't make you a better shooter or stress you.

The Tactical course had us shooting and scooting in close quarters. I have no foolish ideas that I am anything but a weekend warrior, but I am safe.

OP :To make you feel better, look at the ceiling of your local range. Look at the targets of 95% of the folks.

I was introducing 2 friends of my son to handgun shooting at an indoor range with revolvers and semi-autos. I was giving them grief for turning the gun like 10 degrees from center while clearing a jam or having an issue dropping the mag. Then I look to my left and the "expert" next lane had his 1911 pointed to the left 90 degrees. I bet you are better than that.

Define proficient. Can I clean and disassemble my firearms? Yes. Can I shoot them at an average or even above average level? Sure. Am I going to be able to hit a target under stress if someone should ever break into my home and threaten the lives of those living with me? I hope so. Am I a professional shooter? No.

Am I proficient with the firearms I own? I think so.

Nicely put. The few guys who can hit 2-3" torn holes at 25 yards are not common. And mostly because of the handgun sights. But hitting accurately at 10 yards, almost anyone can do with practice.

                        .

                            I consider myself proficient.
I first learned to shoot rifles full/small bore at University,
qualified rifleman at Appleseed - want to take my daughter to one of those.

I shoot a pistol league every week, and (too rarely now) USPSA.

USPSA is a great way to practice handling your firearm under stress.
