Much more likley he will be getting sued by anybody who suffered any kind of damage from the incident. If the perp is dead, they can't sue him so they sue the cops or any civilian shooter who they will claim was helping to "create" the situation that resulted in the loss.

Yes, it's ridiculous but it is what it is.

Isn't the guy who shot an armed robber being sued by the criminals family because the douchebag wasn't pointing the gun at the guy who shot him? I think it was a CCWer in Chicago if I recall.

First is get insurance to cover criminal and civil liability costs. You need at least $1m coverage as a starting point. No matter how justified the shoot you will be civilly sued.
Second is prepare for how to call 911 and talk to initial police responders.
Then prepare how to react to emotional stress. About a third will be okay, a third experience stress for up to a few weeks and then be okay, and another third will have PTSD. Recognize the signs and symptoms so you can deal with it. Understand what priviledged communication is and who you can have it with.
Finally, and this may be the hardest part, stay away from all social media and news reports about the incident. Nothing good will come from reading or participating in it.

Yep that happened. And this is closer to us: http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/201...in-face-suing/

The reality is regardless how justified the shooting, you will face a civil lawsuit. It will add stress and cost $$$ to defend yourself.

And now you find yourself standing with your weapon in hand, slide locked open. People around you are running and screaming. You've just shot someone who was shooting at people in a shopping mall. The shooter's on the ground, not moving.

            It's the aftermath.
What have you done to prepare for what comes next?

Maybe some of your shots missed and hit the big screen TV store, or if it took place outside and you hit a couple of cars
Letters from peoples lawyers arrive accusing you of emotional damage
What if the shooter is only wounded, or maimed and they sue you
            or
You killed the shooter and their family sues you
Your face is in all the papers and anti gun groups hold protests outside your home, your work, your spouses work

and ... the list goes on

So, what have you done - what can you do to prepare for the aftermath of being involved in a shooting?
Well, if my slide is locked back there must have been more then one active shooter. I am not trained in the spray and pray method.

First thing I would do is load another mag because I don't need a self defense hammer.

Once the scene is secure and I'm past the Adrenalin dump, I would call CCWSAFE, who cover my legal issues. Then I would notify my IA, per their requirements. Anyone filing claims for alleged damages would get referred to my Umbrella Policy Insurance company who will handle any potential liability issues.

Wow! What a great question! I would not want to be without plan in place should something happen to protect me and my family from financial ruin. That is a scary thing to think about. Kristine - Member Services Advisor, USCCA
