ok, i just bought a browninb buckmark and a marlin model 60 both new at bass pro. here is the question they told me I had to buy 2 cable locks for the guns, $5 each, wait these are new ca approve guns that comes with cable locks, they told me that the locks are not ca approved locks, is these for real or is bass pro doing this to make more money?

I had that happen with a CZ purchase once. The cable was pretty thin compared to you're typical cable lock. They tossed it and told me I had to buy another; said the one in the box wasn't CA compliant. Stupid, I know. At least I have a safe now and don't have to deal with that BS for PPT's anymore.

      1. Buy 2 locks at Walmart or some other store.

      2. Bring the locks and receipt to BPS when you pickup your handguns.

      3. Tell BPS to take their locks and cram them.

      4. Return locks to Walmart or wherever you got them.

From my understanding, if the locks came with the guns from the factory, that qualifies and you do not need to purchase new locks.

If they make you buy 2 locks, just buy them, walk out the store and put the firearms into your car and walk right back into BPS and return the locks.

Come on now. Wise CA politicians figure these things out for us like how the color of a gun changes it's safety n' all.

Agreed - I had to do the same thing when I bought a Mosin from a local Big 5 years ago. And yes it's just another way these stores squeeze a few more $$$ out of you

They have no choice if they want to sell guns. California requires a state-approved lock or a safe affidavit. Federal law requires a locking device (no safe exemption) be sold with every handgun and enforces it as a separate lock. The combination means that they either sell you a CA approved lock or risk criminal charges from one or both. You can try to play barracks-lawyer and nitpick this to death over $5 but it's not your license to do business that's at risk.

Effective January 1, 2002, no firearm may be sold, transferred, or manufactured within California unless that firearm is accompanied by a DOJ-approved firearms safety device (California Penal Code section 23620, et seq).

The safety device requirement does not apply to the following:
                              • Persons who can demonstrate the purchase of a DOJ-approved safety device in the 30 days prior to taking possession of the firearm by presenting the device to the firearms dealer and providing the firearms dealer with a receipt showing the purchase date and model name of the device.
                              • The commerce of any firearm defined as an "antique firearm" pursuant to federal law.
                              • The commerce of any firearm intended to be used by a salaried, full-time peace officer for law enforcement purposes.
                              • Transfers of firearms to persons who demonstrate ownership of a qualifying gun safe. Ownership may be demonstrated by displaying to the firearms dealer: 1) A receipt indicating purchase of, or an affidavit, signed under penalty of perjury, stating that the purchaser owns a gun safe, and 2) An affidavit, signed under penalty of perjury, stating that the gun safe meets the standards set forth in DOJ regulations.
