Winter Road Trip - No Carry License

Hello all! I've only posted a few times but always gotten good advice. My objective is to travel this winter with my Springfield XD 9mm for self defense only. The details:
    1. Flying from SFO to Vegas.
    2. Renting RV and driving to Utah and camping at Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, & Arches National Park.
    3. Driving to Arizona and camping at Grand Canyon National Park.
    4. Drive to Las Vegas to drop off RV and rent mid-size car.
    5. Drive to and camp at Joshua Tree National Park.
    6. Fly out of Orange County back to SFO.

I do not have a carry license.
I live in Mountain View, CA.
The weapon is licensed in CA.
    I leave in 4 days.

How can I fly to LAS with a gun? Is it allowed? How do I pack it? Any special requirements?

    Any issues crossing state boundaries?

Can I legally travel around to campsites with it. Assume it will need to be locked while on the road which is fine, but what about camping at night? Keep it next to me? Keep it in a tent?

How do I fly from Orange County back to SFO?

To be clear, my intent is to be legal. My intent is not to bend the rules or venture into gray area - at least unknowingly.

    Thanks all!

Sounds like a fun vacation! I do have a CCW - if there's room for me, I can provide asset protection as you travel.

That out of the way, I'm sure someone with more detail will be along to correct me, but here's my quick summary of answers. Nothing here is set in stone, I'm going by memory:

    1. No problem. Package the handgun in your checked luggage according to TSA and your specific airline's rules. Declare it at check-in, pick it up at the other end.

Nevada is an open carry state. No concealed carry without appropriate CCW. There are forbidden zones, so check reliable online sources for detail.

    2. Utah has a specific law that covers carrying (open) in an RV or car. Just don't conceal. You can open carry, unloaded, outside the vehicle.

I believe that when camping in the National Parks, your campsite is considered your "home" and you can open carry there. But outside your immediate campsite (ie the rest of the campground) local laws apply.

    3. AZ is constitutional (permitless) carry, concealed, with rules. Like Nevada, there are forbidden zones.

    4. See point 1.

    5. Back in California, all state laws apply except for the campsite thing in point 2.

    6. See point 1.

Again, please don't take this as gospel. Just posted to get you started before someone more knowledgeable comes along and tells me how wrong I am.

    Have a great trip!

Winter Road Trip - No Carry License

      Depends on type of campsite.

I am no legal expert and take what I type here with a grain of salt as they are only opinions. . .

Typically, National forest and BLM land, carry away. You should be able to shoot in those areas as long as it is not near a campsite, not across a road or stream and the backdrop is dirt and not trees.

National Parks? I do not think so.

I read something about parks vs. forest. Forests are like your backyard, do what you will with common sense. National parks?! You have to treat like fine China.

Go to forest land over park. The trade off? Forests have less amenities vs. park.

By renting an "rv", I'm assuming you mean a motor home. As I recall, you can carry a loaded firearm legally in these as they are considered a "house" car, at least in California. It's been awhile, hopefully someone more in the know will chime in and be able to confirm what I've stated.

IIRC, Unfortunately, California only considers your motor home your home when you are parked and living in it. When you are driving it they consider it a vehicle just like a car. So locked unloaded when driving/traveling. Not sure how other states view it.

We already have the only reasonable Gun Control we need, It's called the Second Amendment and it's the government it controls.

Aren't you LEO? As long as its moving, it's considered a vehicle and all applicable transport laws apply. Must be locked and unloaded.

You should have planned ahead. When I signed up for my Oregon Concealed Handgun License course I paid extra to get certification to apply for the Utah and Arizona non-resident concealed carry permits. If you had obtained permits for Utah and Arizona you would have been able to legally carry concealed in the green and blue states in the map below.

It's too late now but you should do it after you get back so you'll be ready the next time.
              Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.
