Likely moving to CA

Hey all. The wife and I are likely headed to CA on a permanent basis due to an offer that my wife and our circumstances can't turn down via her company. My questions and main concerns are obviously firearm related.

1. I will be retired from the Ohio State Highway Patrol when we move with roughly 12 years of service. How hard is it going to be for me to be able to continue to carry as a retired LEO?

2. I also own firearms I want to keep but I know there are a few on my list that are probably not legal for CA.

-Romanian WASR AK47
-Springfield 1911 45 ACP Range Officer
-Ruger LC9S 9mm (Carry pistol)
-Yugo M57 7.62x25
-RC Mauser K98
-Mosin M44
-CZ 27 32ACP
-Remington 870 12 gauge (Not standard)(Pistol grip, 6 pos. stock)

My advice??? Don't do it. It is not worth it. You might think that her new job pays REALLY well. But you have to look at the cost of living in CA. It is going to eat up any perceived monetary gain the new job is offering.

Examples:

Current avg gas prices: OH $1.65 a gal Orange Co CA $2.40 a gal
Current sales tax: OH 5.75% Orange Co 8%
Average housing cost in Orange Co $600,000
Average car registration fees in CA $300 a YEAR depending on what kind of car you have
We also have smog inspections....will your vehicles conform to CA smog laws?

And this list goes on and on. Something to really think about.

Plus our gun laws suck and are getting worse. As well as laws in CA in general.

Mags. Have to be 10 rounds or less.

Carrying will probably be a pain, there should be threads here on OC.

Use the sticks at the top of the forum.

Handguns: no threaded barrels, mags 10 rds or less.

CenterFire rifles: 30" min length in shortest firable configuration, 16" min barrel length (including muzzle devices), mags 10 rds or less.

Shotguns: not 100%, but I think 18" min barrel length, 30" overall.

But I would agree on avoiding the state if at all possible, many of us would leave at the drop of a hat.

Don't know where you plan to move, but there are areas in Ca that getting a CCW in close to impossible.

Now you being LEO (retired) you may/may not get a different response, some here know better on this issue.

Good luck if you decide to live here, like above mention it's not cheap to call this state home.

As a retired law enforcement officer with 12 years of service, you are eligible to carry a concealed weapon nationwide under the authority of LEOSA. No need for a California CCW of any sort.

If circumstances dictate and you MUST move, then welcome to Cali.... You will love it and hate it at the same time. Never been to Ohio, but i cant fathom it being much better/worse than here
