22 plinkster rifle or generic 12 gauge pump

So these are my two options for an a xmas present. Not sure what to choose. I don't need either but receiving a gun as present is always awesome. There are pros with both platforms the 22 is obviously good for cans and good fun with a scope at close range. The shotgun can shoot clays but also fun with slugs etc. What would you go with?

Shotgun, only because I do not have one and have two .22 rifles.

Maybe help fund the shotty and get a bit better than minimum one?

Since you are "close" to an outdoor range, both options are nice.

Shotgun also, that's why I bought one for myself yesterday. Plus I have a 22 already.

        Calguns answer: GET BOTH

        P.S.: You need a 22LR and a 12 gauge. Everyone does.

What did I miss. Where did the OP say he was close to an outdoor range?

OP, I have both. If I were you I'd get the .22 rifle.

I think he may have been leaning with my description as to what I would do with either, plinking clays etc. Im thinking about the rem 597 comes with a cheapo lil scope for 130ish, might be the one.
