So what do you set as your "battle" range

    Some people pick 100 yards.

I've heard that 50 is the ideal as the 50 and 200 yard are the same point of impact.

I usually zero 1" high at 100 yards. This is a hunting zero, not battle.

As I understand it, you can zero an AR at 25 yards for a battle zero. Ted posted some specifics a while back about this very thing.

For AR's the "Santose improved battle zero" IIRC is 50 yards/~200meters and it also utilizes a little hardware mod that keeps your AR's ability to use the 300m to 800m elevation adjustments.

I'm not sure what you mean by battle range, but each cartridge/rifle combo will have its own sweet spot as far as "Maximum Point Blank Range" is concerned.

Dead on at 100 yards, its too unlikely I will be doing math under the heat of battle (with deer). 100 yards is as flat as it gets for my hunting rifles. I also have a Shepherd scope on my 300 WinMag it is set at 100 yards and is factory set for the speed and trajectory of your cartridge.

It's unlikely you'd ever take a shot at more than 100-150 yards. While hunting, most well placed shots are taken well within 150 yards, and police sniping is done at under 100.

Only in the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan, or other military conflicts do you see long range sniping used.

I really think it depends on the gun. For an AR Semi-auto or Full-auto rifle I’ll take 50-100 yards. For bolt action I would put my zero out to 300+. Distance is a huge advantage over your target, more so then fire power. If you have the ballistic and accuracy advantage use it. I would much rather pop shots at 500+ yards with a bolt action 308 then 50 yards with a AR full auto. But hey, I'm a sniper at heart.

Zero the Iron sights out to 100 yards and zero the laser to 50 yards. Probably never use either to defend against more that a 2 litre plastic bottle but what the heck.

I zero my ARs at 50 yds, per the IBZ. .223 is flat enough out to 200 yds to hit the critical areas.
