The drive from the Bay Area would be too much for a day trip like I make. But if you camp overnight and make a weekend of it, definitely worth the trouble.

Usually I'm alone out there on BLM land. That's why I like it, no people, no rangers, me and my guns. Indoor ranges are scary, you never know who might muzzle swipe you or if they are suicidal jerks.

Panoche is about a 3 hour drive for me. Last time I went there I did it on a business trip to Long Beach, I drove instead of flying just so I could stop and shoot on the way.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

Since you're in the Bay Area, a good alternative might be the Twin Sisters Gun Club. It is a private club and I think membership is by invitation only, but someone here might be able to hook you up.

They offer long range shooting too.

OP, bring some friends with you next time and spend a weekend camping in the desert. If people want to shoot, you can do it comfortably in the morning and evening before it gets hot and spend the rest of the time getting drunk with your pals.

Speaking only for myself here, but wouldn't be surprised if other shared my sentiment, you as a stranger would not be welcome coming out to my BLM spot with me for no other reason than nobody would know you, so nobody could vouch for you.

which is understandable, my curiousity lies when people say "My spot" on blm... clearly youre just referring to a spot in which you like to shoot at? im not asking for people to display their location on where they shoot, just if people would like to go sometime, i choose tumey hills as i can sit in a depression with 360 valley cover and still shoot 1000+ yards. i just enjoy the company of a spotter to maybe range a target, wind, hit/miss, friendly competition, drills etc...

EDIT: i dont consume alcohol whenever a firearm is present just in case a scenario arises where i need to function at 100%, not a big drinker. although i do enjoy a $80 shot of McCallans every once in a while lol

I've pmed the op, I'm willing to run out with him after the holidays roads are a little slimy with the rain but they dry out quick. Stay on the roads rangers favorite ticket is the ignorance rule. Thou shalt stay on approved and marked roads. Which seem to change monthly and have nothing to do with how well used the track looks.

I too, go out to Nevada several times throughout the year and shoot on some awesome land near my parents house. In fact, we had to (safely) evacuate a MIG welder tank that the handle broke off of and nobody would take, for liability reasons...what better way to do that than shooting at it with a Mosin 91/30?! Yes, it was completely safe since we buried the bottom half in the dirt so there was no way that thing would rocket off at us or anywhere else. Here's the vid; https://youtu.be/rGt9FB_qDg4

These guys in this situation, were shooters, but I would not consider them to be fellow anything. Think baggy pants and shirts 2 sizes too big with flatbill hats.

I've shot propane tanks too but I hear ya about the safety. When I did it, it was during the winter and was actually raining so there were no problems.

I did some work for PG&E out there and those hills get nasty! Even the CalFire folks told me they won't go out there if it's real bad. I think the land we were on mostly belonged to a guy named Wattace...?! Cool land though and I definitely thought it'd be perfect for shooting.

We did have a problem with locals playing with our backhoe though, which could have been bad if they were able to get it started and struck the gas main with about 900PSI of natural gas in a 36" diameter pipe We started leaving it up the hill at the end of the day.
