    blm weekend warriors

how often do you guys and gals go shooting and commute to panoche hills or other various blm down south? im from the bay area and frequent blm lands but id like to get some other shooters out there, it gets boring by myself sometimes. its about a 1.5-2 hour drive. i seen a group of guys down there about a month ago but they were more of a "lets meet as a group and waste numerous amounts of ammo at 10-40 yards with our ARs and 10/22 and old moisons", not my cup of tee. any frequent shooters who travel down there that want to go shooting sometime? maybe do some long range shooting, im really content with whatever to be honest. unless it involves unnecessary wasting ammo because we all know we dont have politician payroll.

Welcome to the forum! You might have better responses in this subforum:

Please use the land responsibly and police more than your fair share of debris.

That's a great handle he uses.....
Go out to most BLM lands and look over the topography; you will soon discover a heavy fire load potential with the current fuels.

i think fire hazard season for panoche, tumey, laguna etc ended october 15th, ive been to tumey a couple times now since then, definitely still dry. i try an police as much brass and crap as possible, also brass has value and looks better when not laying on the grond.

How do the fires start? Metal jacket sparks a rock? Hot bullets landing on dry grass?

Im sure it could happen I dont see how.

People shooting glass bottles, and leave em behind. Sun hits the glass, magnifying glass effect, and you can easily have a fire. The desert has plenty to burn besides sand. Sparks from idiots shooting at rocks, etc.

Last time i was at Xmas tree Lane, I witnessed 2 idiots throwing out a few 3lb propane bottles to use as targets. Hopped into my truck and drove out to the road and called the local fuzz, saw them having their stuff checked /searched when I left awhile later.

Down south in the foothills BLM is closed until mid December. Imperial County is open all year. I was there Saturday, perfect weather, no wind.

This is the exact opposite reasoning for why most people choose to shoot on BLM.

Many of the fires on public lands are the result of improper use of, and inadequate extinguishment of campfires. For example: I go out to BLM lands in Kern County in an area with light to moderate fuels, and build a large campfire to enjoy the evening. I leave the next morning. In the late afternoon, the winds pick up, blowing hot coals from the previous night's fire into the brush, and away it goes. Hot coals and partially burned wood/trash in fire pits can smolder for days; that is but one scenario.
Keep in mind that most federal agencies are thin on fire protection, most of which is seasonal at best. With fewer resources that must cover huge geographic areas, it is easy to see why response times can be delayed.
So how do you manage a fire pit on public land? Keep the campfires reasonable, away from brush, and properly extinguish when done using. Use a good steel shovel to carefully stir coals while mixing in plenty of water. While doing this, have a spotter watch for embers if it gets windy.

really? i always was under the impression that i could go out there because local ranges only provide minimal distance, have 3 second firing gaps, and other various strict rules. maybe thats just your opinion? do you not take a spotter when you go to shoot 1000+ yard distances? different strokes for different folks, youll never get efficient squad/team situational awareness, transitions, drills etc. by yourself in an isolated area. thats just my opinion though
