How to start a gun range

I'm sure somebody can give me an idea where to start. Let's say I have a piece of land that has the potential to be used as a gun range. The owner of the land is pretty willing to work out building a range. Being a long term project, what short term steps need to be taken in order to get my ducks in a row. Are there any known professional in the Sacramento area that can help understand all the issues? County issues, land owner/leasing issues? What are the immediate show stoppers that need to be addressed to determine the possiblitie of making this work?

    The NRA is your friend.

NRA Range Services offers a number of resources to public and private ranges across the country including on-site assistance, educational seminars, grants and much more. Take an online course, learn from the NRA Range Technical Team and find other educational materials and resources.

If the jurisdiction you are in has a planning department, you should verify with them. Some areas have specific ordinances regarding these facilities.

Get a consultant or contractor specialized in the feild.

          For example
Range Systems is the leading equipment provider for law enforcement, military, commercial, and home ranges worldwide.

Are you looking to build a range for you and friends or a commercial range?

There are a handful of companies that sell all the equipment for indoor ranges that can help with a start up....

My favorite was the range that colion noir uses with the tire back stops.... Urban legend is that he started collecting tires and collecting the $1 or $2 per tire recycling fee. He used the money to fund the range... The tires were squished into blocks via a bailer....

He uses a forklift to move the bails of tires as bullet traps.

As they are mobile, he can change the layout of a shoot house in a few hours...
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Community Planning Advisory Councils if in Sacramento County. Other Counties may have them too. They are kind of a dry run prior to the real deal. Try to get in contact with the local chairman for the basics. You will need an EIR and someone knowledgeable in the code requirements, setbacks, bufferzones, ADA compliance, Fire Dept requirements and engineering. Be prepared to spend thousands or tens of thousands before you find out if you will be approved.

just remember that EPA is NOT your friend, they have shut down more ranges due to lead issues. May you be successful we need more ranges.

I would start by doing a Google Earth tour of 1,000 outdoor ranges....

Get a feel for what you want to build....

I would go to a bunch of the ranges that have a similar layout... read the public reviews.... Does the public like the range?

Many range owners who are not near you will share who makes the equipment... at many ranges it is even listed on the gear and you can see it on pictures on social or their site...

The very first thing you have to do is get the hell out of California. You are never going to get any investors to fund a venture in this state where at any given second the entire means of making a profit is abolished.

It would be a massive risk to do it on your own dime for the same reason.

Between the gun grabbers trying to keep firearms out of the state and the panics where you cannot get ammo let alone new and soon to be announced ammo purchasing limits and the EPA along with conservation efforts doing everything they can to keep people from being able to shoot lead bullets or bullets period it just does not make any sense whatsoever to even consider a business in the firearms industry within the state of California.

You could argue that by not trying that we are giving them exactly what they want, but we already did. This state is a lost cause for 2nd Amendment rights period.

First, I would want to buy a lot of land.

Contact Lisa Gunther at Gunther Guns here in Carlsbad. They have been trying to build a commercial indoor gun range here for a year and a half. The permits may become available by next summer. She will tell you everything you need to do here to succeed.

How do you make a small fortune running a shooting range?

                              Start with a large fortune.
