Difference between Smith & Wesson 686+ Pro 5" and 686 SSR Pro

Besides the barrel length, what are the differences and what do you recommend? Is the price difference between these and a stock 6" 686 justified? Thank you for the input.

The 5" model is a 7 shot with moon clips. The 4" is a 6 shot with no moon clips.

The 686 SSR is part of S&W's Pro Series, which is in between the standard production models and the Performance series. It's intent was to be an 'out of the box' and ready for competition in SSR (Stock Service Revolver) competitions. I've found mine to be a great gun and very accurate as well. When I compared it to a friends 686+, I also found it to have a nicer trigger. Mine also came with a set of rubber grips in addition to the wooden ones with the SSR badging.

For me the SSR seemed to be worth the extra money but you'll need to decide if it is for you. I personally like the 4" over the 5" or 6" and the extra round didn't make a difference for me.

If there is a possibility you may use it in any competitions, research the different competitions for their rules and requirements. Things like barrel length and round capacity limits. Beyond that, it's mostly personal preference. I went with the 5" 686 Pro because I like longer barrels, 7 shot capacity, and the cylinder being cut for moonclips. Some feel the 6" with full lug is nose heavy. I shot them before and liked it. The slab and shaved lug on the Pro series should give better balance.
