    Defensive handgun classes?

Where in Orange County can you take a defensive handgun class? I am looking for a beginner class for my wife and her friend. I know On Target has one but I have not heard too much about if it is good or not. Also can anyone recommend a pistol for a 5'4 110 lb lady that is looking for a self defense gun? Thanks!

Just curious, you don't already have a pistol that she likes?

I recommend that she tries a bunch of pistols, then picks what she likes and what fits her well. A bunch of guys on the internet can't pick for her

Try loaning her one of yours and after she has a class she will better know what she wants to buy. You can also go to a range and rent several.

For instructors I took my NRA Handgun Instructor class with TJ Johnston at All Safe Defense Systems and was very impressed.

POPULAR COURSES: This course is specifically designed for the beginning shooter, to allow the opportunity to experiment with handguns under the supervision of knowledgeable instructors. This class will familiarize shooters with the capabilities of and liabilities for using a handgun for defense. Click here for full description and schedule We

On TJ's Basic Handgun class, some students don't own any handgun & they will use one of TJ's for the class. TJ will put out a bunch of different handguns for his students to try out. I don't know if any other instructors out there that does this also.

honestly the best training for the money and experience will be Front Sight. I known the On Target guys well. not sure the skill level is there... some are really nice others are posers.

but I would try Front Sight for sure, took my wife and she learned a bunch, you will learn more there then any training around here

yep you're right. 1 hour or 4 days...

good to know LAPD is leading the charge. I have shot with LAPD, not impressed. but your wise advice is pretty scary.

If your wife and her friend have never shot before, I would recommend finding a local Women on Target class to get themselves some basic handgun familiarity. This way they can gauge if they want to continue shooting or not fairly inexpensively.

If they do want to continue, then as far a gun selection goes, like others have mentioned, find a range that rents a variety of handguns and have her rent a few to see what she likes before she buys. She has to be comfortable with the choice, not necessarily you.

A good starting point would be the Glock 19 and work from there IMHO.

If she wants further training beyond a WoT or basic style NRA course, then I'll also recommend ITTS given your location. Scotty and crew are GTG.

As for Front Sight, nothing wrong there as far as the basics. The cost and time differential between going to ITTS (L.A.) vs. Front Sight (NV) may be off putting. Again, I think ITTS would be a better value.

                    Good luck!

Another vote for TJ. Looking at his schedule, he's got a Basic class on December 5th.

I bet Iggy Piazza is a better chiropractor than the Scott Reitz, I'll give you that much.

I've shot with many Front Sight grads, including Distinguished Graduates; not impressed.
A very different bunch than the run-of-the-mill patrol officers....they actually know which end of the gun the bullet exits from.
