    Shooting in Nevada desert?

I'm planning a trip to the Reno area of Nevada this week and would like to go shooting out in the open. What areas could I go shoot and not get in some sort of trouble (i.e. black military choppers flying overhead .) I know there are military bases out there and definatly don't want to encroach on them. So anyone got some secret spots they want to share?
    Please, calm down.

Call the Sheriffs dept. and ask them, thats your safest bet.

P.S. Don't take many hicaps with you, don't wanna get them taken if you get stopped while bringing them back in (which is legal if you owned them already)

Last year my son and i went to Washoe range near Pyramid Lake. Going there and coming back, we saw numerous people not far from the road just having a good old time shooting with the hills as a backstop. I would make sure you are not on the reservation though. Heard they are ballbusters about guns and stuff. Like JP said, check with the sheriffs up there.

The state is like 97% federal government property. It's the only state which the federal government has tried to nuke out of existence. You use to be able to shoot near Sloan but IIRC the ARF.com gang there said it was closed/off-limits now.

Also Nevada has a 1mile rule.. those people shooting near the road were asking for trouble...

The problem with BLM land closer to Reno is that it is interspersed with state property in a 1 mile per side checkerboard, particularly to the East. You need to go East about an hour or North to get to larger blocks of BLM with long, clear, lanes of fire. Too far North of Reno and you enter the Pyramid Lake Reservation.
Thanks guys, I guess I'll be talking to the Sheriff when I get there.

The Carson City Range, near the dump is a good choice. It is run by the BLM, it is no cost, there is cover, concrete benches, and it is out to 300 yards with lots of trash to fire at. Bring your own target stands. PS, never go down range un-armed or leave your hardware on the bench without somone watching it!!!!

Also, what about the area in on hwy 80, just out side of Reno, may even still be in CA. The area to the left of the hwy looks remote, and there appears to be dirt road access.

call the local police or the nevada public safety office. They will point you in the right direction
