    PPT Sales Record

    Hi,

I sold my rifle via PPT about 1 year ago at a gun store and recently I was required to provide a document to show that the PPT was done legally. I tried to obtain a copy of the sales record from the gun store but was told that there is no document for seller. Is it really the case? Where can I get a copy of the sales record? CA DOJ?

    Thanks

the seller could have, at the time of the PPT, given you a copy of the PPT DROS paperwork. with the new DES system, he could print out a "seller copy" that had your info on it. the buyer would get a "buyer copy".

before that, the DROS system just printed out one copy with both parties info on it and the FFL was supposed to redact the other party's info off the copy he gave you.

but to now generate that printout is probably too late.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

They're required by law to provide you a copy of the DROS upon request. However you have to request this at the time of transfer.

I recently applied a job that required some sort of background check. As part of background check, it asked whether I sold any guns before. I answered yes. Then I was required to provide documents to prove that the sales were done legally.

What job was this? That sounds crazy unless it's some sort of law enforcement and even then sounds like junk

You might be able to get the FFL you sold it at to just sign a letter stating that you in fact transferred the gun at their place of business last year.

I was stupid. I should have answered no. I heard that there is no record on seller via PPT.

Just tell them there is no method that the CA Dept of Justice provides for you to prove you did it legally now that it has been so long, and back then there was no provision in the computer system nor requirement in law to provide the seller any documentation. And any information that the gun store still has (like the 4473) contains all the buyer's personal information and they will not release it to anyone except ATF.

This is the dumbest request I ever heard of coming from a prospective employer. Are you applying for a job at the Brady lobby?

If they deny you employment solely over this I would sue the living crap out of them.

It is illegal for them to even ask for that. You would also like be committing a crime if you provided it. You should call the CA DOJ BOF and tell them that you applied for a job and that they are demanding that you provide copies of DROS for firearms that you have sold. I guarantee that the DOJ will have a few words with them. A DROS is confidential.

Id imagine the shop the transfer was done at can dig out the paperwork that was done at the time, make a copy of the DROS for you with the buyer's info redacted. They may have a fee for that, but it's probably minimal.
