Lead Removal From Barrel

I did a rush, rush job last night cleaning my 45, lots of lead build-up. After I was done, I realized I didn't wear any gloves. worst part is, once the lead is disolved by the cleaner, it turns into a really toxic liquid that can be absorbed by the skin, changing patches etc.
Regretting my stupidity this morning, I thought I would share my thoughts, and say "wear your gloves" when you clean your guns!

Yea, you're going to die.
If you believe all the urban myths about lead poisoning and solvents.
I usually try to shoot a few fmj rounds at the end of a session to eliminate a lot of the lead build up.

Just curious, what type of .45 were you shooting?

Sir let me tell you , I cleaned my guns in Iraq for many years 2 Ak47 and 2 pistols and I never wore a glove until I came to America.I didn't die and nothing happened to me.

^^^I have been cleaning guns for over 30 years and have never worn gloves. Than again, I have never worn skinny jeans or ordered a latte...

I use peroxide and vinegar.

A weak version of Peracetic Acid eh? I make that stuff for a living. Wineries and breweries love that stuff. Great sanitizer.

But I prefer lead in my pencil, not in mt diet.

I hate to break the news to you, but pencils use graphite.

I have been cleaning firearms that I used lead bullets in for decades. In a previous job, I was exposed to lead, and had to have my blood tested occassionally, and the tests never revealed any blood poisoning. I agree, take precautions, but I am not too worried about lead. I do wash my hands throughly after handling lead for reloading and shooting.

45 years of cleaning firearms without gloves. Take reasonable precautions (like not licking the lead bullets) and you will not lose any IQ points from lead absorbed while cleaning up after your shooting irons.
