Is there a PPT guide somewhere?

I've been trolling the "For Sale" forums and I feel like I'd like to pull the trigger on a few deals. However I am ever so slightly reticent since I've never bought a firearm from a private party before. I have some questions about what to expect, where to meet, inspect the item, methods of payment (in general), how to not get ripped off, best practices etc etc.

I'm not sure if anyone's written a "Newbies guide to buying PPT in California" or not but I'd love to read it

    Here's what I do.

    Meet at the gun store.

Prior to starting paper work, ask for a few minutes to inspect the gun.

If all is well, start the paperwork. Shop makes copy of seller's information.

I usually pay, in cash, once seller has completed all his paperwork and gave his thumbprint (if needed).

Will most stores let you use their space to do the inspection and whatnot? Seems to me that some would get a little cranky if you're cluttering up their shop and they don't even get a piece of the action so to speak.

All of the places I've done PPT have been ok with it. You're still paying the shop the PPT fees so they're involved.

If you buy from a Calgun member I think you're pretty safe. I've meet at local FFL's and inspected the gun in the shop usually (sometimes not if the shop is cranky) and pay for the item. Then I go in and transfer. It's usually someone likeminded and responsible and it's not a big deal. Don't be scared at all it's a common practice around here.

I just did my first, with a Calgunner.
            Everything went smooth as silk.
One of the benefits of doing it with a Calgunner is that you can check his/her itrader references. Helps ease some of the anxiety.

Heck, if the shop I'm going has staff that I know are competent in their knowledge of firearms and gun repair, I'll even get them to look over the gun as well if they're not busy.
