Low Ball Offers

Hello all. Looking for your thoughts. I find myself looking a few times a day in the marketplace and often times come across ads where the seller writes "low ball offers will be ignored"

I'm curions what you all consider a low ball offer???? I mean sure... 1/2 off asking prices seems a little ridiculous. But what about 10 or 20% off?

I sometimes come across ads that interest me and want to make an offer at a lower than asking price, but don't necessarily want to offend anyone.

If someone has a listing priced fairly, I don't haggle at all. If someone is selling a gen 4 glock for 850, I think 700 is a fair counter offer. Depends on the item, but don't haggle unless the price is listed as OBO.

I have a scope listed in the marketplace for over 25 percent off msrp. I've had people offer me less than half of what I paid for it. Pretty insulting, but I did list it as OBO. So shame on me!!

When I post something for sale I put the price I want. Means thats what I want . Most times if its negotiable they will say so , or say make an offer. Im sure most here feel the same as me if I gotta sell something. You already know you are not gonna get what you paid. So your asking prce is usually the lowest you will go.

A seller's interpretation of a low ball offer is very subjective. There's no right or wrong with this. That being said, I would think asking 20% in this market is pushing it in most cases personally. But to ask can't hurt either. Just don't be surprised if ignored. In most cases the seller has the upper hand.

If you see something you want, but don't like the price, make an offer. What's the worst that can happen? That they'll ignore your offer? BFD

Long as you sound genuine and humble...most sellers will reply back to you.

It depends on how you feel about the seller. I consider this a pretty small community and I'm not going to offer some price I know to be unfair to the seller, even if I think I can get it. I assume the seller is my friend, even if I don't know him/her.

I don't have any problem sending an offer that I think to be too low with the disclaimer that I am aware it is too low but it is what I have and not what the thing is worth.

I typically don't get low ball offers, just people that insist on paying with PAYPAL. Barely even those with trades.

On occasion, I also buy and sell guitars. While this is an inexact parallel the general market concepts hold true.


First, no one cares what MSRP was/is or what you paid for your for sale item.

If you paid too much for your item, you can't expect a buyer to compensate you for over paying for it in the first place.

Just as a buyer can't expect you to lower the price if you got a good deal.

The laws of Supply and demand still hold true.


Off roster guns, for example, are sold at higher prices to take advantage of reduced supply.

Speculators often buy these guns in the hope of reaping the benefit of the sudden reduction in supply.

However, they often price the guns so high that they actually reduce demand.


There is no such thing as a "low ball" offer. Your gun (guitar, car, whatever) is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay.

What ever two parties agree to exchange product for cash, is the exact value as tested by the market...
