Seeing how you'll basically be going up against other people and the police armed with AR15's and other semi autos/full autos, how are you suppose to fare with just a short range shotgun? Run and hide house to house?

A slug will do wonders at 100 yards. Get some slugs and give them a go.

Alright, so you manage to get within 100 yards of someone armed and take a shot, and you miss. Now they are spraying/suppressing fire at you, and are closing in on you fast. You could possible fire only 6 times before you have to stop and reload as they are chasing you down.A slug will do wonders at 100 yards. Get some slugs and give them a go.

Shotgun is good for HD. What your talking about is a whole different beast. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria)"Comment

Maybe don't get into a gunfight in the first place? If you really have to then be sure to politely invite them inside before the blasting begins.Stay Low, Go Fast, Take ChancesComment

I have been having a lot of fun with the basic Mossberg 590A1 18” heavy barrel bead front sight shotgun for that past year. Within what I would consider ‘self-defense’ distances, less than 50 yards, it is devastating and accurate. On a full size silhouette it easily keeps slugs in the 10 ring and at 25 yards OO buckshot shreds the target. I spent 3 years in Iraq & Afghanistan and the Mossberg 590A1 was the only shotgun the GI’s carried. A popular modification was to replace the shoulder stock with a pistol grip and cut the barrel back to flush with the 5 round magazine tube. For around $400.00 it is a lot of bang for the buck!
Cheers,

Just open the door, and send 2 blasts out into the tree line. You'll be gucci.
Seriously: load it with birdshot and go catch dinner? Or maybe use it against soft targets under 25 yards? Sleep with it? I don't trust an AR condition 1 unless I have 100% control, free float firing pin and all...Comment

Let's see, a shotgun is very good for close range defense and hunting which makes it very versatile. As someone mentioned shotguns can reach out farther with the right barrel and slugs. Plus with a shotgun and a few barrels you have the ability to use your shotgun for many different jobs, from up close to farther and big game and bird hunting.
I plan to take a shotgun with me if I ever have to bug-out. Having a shotgun is a good option. My main use for a shotgun is for close range defense and bird, rabbit, or squirrel hunting. If you have a homestead or plan to bug-in on a large property a shotgun would be a great asset.
My friend who's in the army said they used shotguns to breach door locks and someone on their team usually had one. I've see several pictures of my buddy in Afghanistan carrying a shotgun. So the army still sees a need for a shotgun. Why wouldn't you?Last edited by North Bay Guy; 10-16-2015, 4:55 AM.Comment
