Is Gun Control a Conservative ideology?

Conservative ideology would be low risk and not ready for change. A more progressive view on gun control would be to throw out all of the existing laws. There is a constitutional amendment that shouldn't allow gun laws, but over the last 100 or so years it has been safe to create laws that regulate guns. Since those laws have been accepted any attempt to remove them wouldn't be considered conservative. So are you progressive on gun laws, and do you want to throw out the existing laws?

Yeah, from what I've read it was conservative Democrats who didn't want to be overpowered by minorities. All of the KKK folks were Democratic southerners.

        ^^ This...

It turns out that a few black guys with guns in the state capital can even make Ronald Reagan sign some gun control.

However, to the OP's original point, by definition gun control cannot possibly be a "liberal" position. The problem is that today's "liberals"... well... AREN'T. They've been corrupted by special interest, and re-branded themselves as "progressive". To me, this term is even more offensive than "liberal". Taking people's rights away should never be considered "progress".

What black people made him support the federal assault weapons ban?

Congress said his support made it pass, by swaying some critical republican votes.

He is referencing the Black Panthers and Reagan banning open carry here in CA.

Assault Weapon is a term that hadn't been invented yet. Clinton signed the bill the created that term.

It goes back even further. The beginning of CA gun control was in the late 1800's against Chinese immigrants.

There was an excellent article about two years ago in American Rifleman with actual newspaper articles from the period where CA banned carry, then several years later repealed the law for having negative consequences, exactly as we see today.

Yea I know but they certainly don't only need this type of reason.

That is the same one the Reagan was instrumental in passing. We also enjoy an overwhelmingly democratic controlled government in California and gun restrictions because of his amnesty.

Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczinski brings to light something I was previously unaware of, namely the role that Ronald Reagan played in passing the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban: As the assault weapon ban…

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

it still stands the test of Federal law. Laws will be passed here pending a legal ruling. It's up to a judiciary process to send laws through the ringer. I have a six month old son who might see daylight on the gun laws here.

yup; the confusion comes in because the term conservative is wrong.

Progressive leftist types bestowed that title on their opponents. Re: what is the opposite of a progressive? A conservative... you're not a progressive ergo your a X.

and/or we did not pick the term conservative for ourselves. It was applied to us by the other side and we eventually decided to 'just own it'.

In most of the world; we would be called Liberals (Sweden, Australia, France, whatever). and/or classical liberals... which is why neo liberal is a left wing pejorative in most of the world.

So; we're pro gun because we are classical liberals who support our founding values which include public ownership of arms.
