Need cal gunners help!

Hey all you cal gunners!

Was wondering if anyone could help me out and give me some insight on this rifle. My dads friends father passed away and left him this rifle. We dont know anything about it except what we see. We dont even know it its even able to be shot. It looks fine, but im not experienced with these rifles nor a gun smith. below are some pictures of the rifle. I cant seem to find any information on it online. It looks like an amazing rifle and i would love to fire it.

Looks to be a Winchester 1894 in .30 WCF (Winchester center fire) also know as 30-30 Winchester, you really need to get it checked by a competent gunsmith.

Anyone suggestions on where to get a hold of a good gun smith and also what does the cost run for something like that?

Depends on overall condition. Once you know more about what kind of rifle you have you can compare it to other rifles. Don't pay much attention to what the asking price is but rather what they actually sell for. Their can be a world of difference.

If the gunsmith offers to buy it their is a good chance you are better off holding on to it. They know when they see a gem.

I also believe it's at Winchester 1894 but I could be wrong some of the Winchester models look similar. You also have a special target sight, located on the rear I don't know the name but I think it's worth a little more in value .
Additionally you have the octagonal barrel That is probably worth a few extra dollars.
You need to get the value imput from one of the lever gun experts who should be along shortly, I am not one of them.

The press 1964 production models are worth a lot more than the later models.

I looked up the serial and that rifle appears to be a 1909 production.

I'll take it!...seriously that rifle is better built than half the crap being made today even by the same company. If it functions check the bore is free of obstructions and shoot it, I would bet it has seen very little use.

That thing looks good for 106 years old.
I just ran the serial # and it says it was made in 1909.
I would agree it's a model 94.

Try browsing the "Have an Old Winchester?" Sticky in the "Curio & Relic/Black Powder" Forum. They have a lot of info there. Also, posting in that forum asking about good gunsmiths will likely get you feedback from a lot of knowledgeable lever action guys. I took my 100+ year old Model 94 to Bolsa Gunsmithing in Westminster to get a broken site replaced and test fired. They did OK, but, may be much better smith's around for an old Winchester.

I agree with George W, keep it! They don't make them like that anymore.

It is a Winchester 1894. The 30 W.C.F. (Winchester Center Fire) is the 30-30 cartridge. When Marlin chambered its lever guns in the 30 W.C.F. it renamed the cartridge to 30-30 to avoid using the Winchester name. I have my grandfather's 1894, that was made in 1898, and there are no problems in shooting it. This is what I would do, if I wanted to shoot it. I would clean and inspect the barrel. If it is clear with no obstructions and there are no visible cracks, I would next visibly inspect the bolt for any cracks or damage. Last I would cycle some ammo through the action to verify that it is in working order. If you have no indications of problems, I would not hesitate to fire it.
