subsonic ammo penitration

I was watching a gun show and they mentioned subsonic 9 mm penetrating body armor. Please explain how a subsonic bullet can do that out of a pistol with a silencer.

I had some subsonic 9mm that was ball ammo it might penetrate because it doesn't expand and spread the impact over a larger area.

I fiind this highly unlikely. Sounds like FUD.

A lot of police departments issue subsonic ammo as it penetrates car door and such before the projectile starts to expand. I highly doubt it would penetrate body armor although a knife would do a better job than most bullets.
