Turning my Kern CCW papers in tomorrow

    Hey guys-

Sorry i have not been on much in the last few weeks. I've been down in the dumps. Had some girlfriend problems after being together almost 4 years and trying to work things out and change a few things in my life. When i get a moment I try to come on and should be coming around more soon...

Anyways, I've wanted to apply for my CCW but have not gotten around to it. I figure it is time to do something positive for myself with all this negative stuff lately.

So i'm turning my paperwork in tomorrow, hopefully I'll get approved. Of course it is in kern county, will be 22 in less than 2 weeks and have a clean record.....

My reason i'm putting down is this:

I live in Kernville and have to travel weekly for school to Los Angeles and often late at night. Due to the remoteness and lack of cell phone reception in the Kern River Canyon, I feel particularly at risk while traveling through this area and would like to be able to lawfully carry a concealed weapon for my own safety. I am also an avid hiker and camper who spends lots of time alone in the wooded areas of the Sequoia National Forest and feel that lawfully carrying a concealed weapon would keep myself safe from possible encounters with wild animals or criminals.

Anything I should change to that???

Now, I'll be listing my Seecamp, J frame S&W, and either the new hi-power or 1911....I have yet to decide on that....I also have an XD .40....I'd sure like the 1911 but worry about mag. capacity and weight. Its a 4" springfield champion

You're probably being overly cautious about your reason statement, as this is Kern County, home of Sheriff Mack Wimbish! You're going to get your permit (assuming nothing is found on your BG check).

If you feel the need to add something to your statement, mention how often you shoot at a range (keeping in practice), your history with firearms, etc. Otherwise, you're going to be fine.

I still remember how nervous I felt the first time I went for my CCW. It wasn't through the Kern County sheriff, but the Bakersfield PD (I lived in Bakersfield at the time, and the sheriff wouldn't issue permits to city residents; that's no longer the case with Mack). I had to submit to a fairly lengthy interview from a BPD detective, during which he brought up my address on his computer, and asked me about the entry that said "firearms at residence". He wanted to know why a BPD officer had been called to my house sometime in the past, as the only way an entry like that would have appeared is by someone in the BPD office having placed it there! At first, I panicked, even though I've never had a BPD officer come to my house for any reason (other than a social one; my neighbor at that time was a BPD officer). Suddenly, I realized that the entry must have been placed there by the BPD Chief due to the fact that I have a C&R FFL, and one of the requirements of that license is that you notify your local CLEO about the license. He agreed that that must be the reason, and went ahead and issued the permit.

When I moved to Tehachapi and changed my permit to the sheriff's office, they didn't even interview me! I just paid my monies, took the refresher course, and got my permit. Could not have been easier.

I've been kicking the idea around down here in Riverside where it's not shall issue but sometimes issue. I teach computer networking at UCR and will carry in four laptops and a projector with a total value at about $5000. For my temple I'm the treasurer and will bring home a bunch of money following fund raisers ... I think that's going to be my first shot along with a letter from the abbot.
