    S & W 42- I need information

    Hi,
Does anyone know anything about a blued Model 42 alloy frame in 38 Spcl.5 shot?
The serial # on the yoke under the Model 42 is 205XX, and the number on the grip bottom is 137XX. Why are they different?
Years made, selling price, etc. Thanks.

it's an assembly number, used before the actual s/n is assigned.

the number on the butt is the official one.

btw, it's on the yoke. crane is Colt.

        The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson isn't much help. It shows models 40 & 42 had a serial number range of 1 - 30160 between 1952 & 1971.

ETA: 1957: Stamping of model number, 1966: Change thumbpiece, 1968: Delete diamond grip

              Simple.

Call S&W at 1-800-331-0852 & ask for customer service.

Give the customer service rep your serial # and ask in a polite voice, what year was
              the gun made.

              They'll tell you.

              Good Luck.

I called S & W and they said it is 1963 manufacture. Yikes.
They said the serial number was not on the butt, it is on the yoke. ?
