Pick a gun shop. There prices will generally be the same no matter where you go

it might help if you're a little bit more specific about what area you're in but everything in Bay is going to be a little bit pricey in my opinion.
It's always better to mail order it beforehand if you can.
While finding the best price through a "ammoseek" type website.
(it allows you to find an exact ammo you want at lowest prices on the web.)

you might try calling some local Big 5 store and asking if they have any specials or discounts on ammo right now.
it doesn't happen often and it's not a huge discount but it takes some of the sting out of their normally overpriced ammo.

am I the only one in the bay that thinks a huge "wholesale prices" firearms store would do very well here.
they would have 0 competition. imagine opening a business that has 0 competition.

Why don't you buy online? Places like Freedom Munitions, Cabelas, Gander Mountain and Target Sport USA offer good prices. They also have free shipping offers.

If you need to buy locally due to ammo online sale restriction in your city/county, Walmart (eg. Milpitas) is your best bet. Approximate prices:
              - 12ga birdshots: Around $54.80 or something like that per box of 25. Estate and Winchester whitebox brand.

              - .223rem: $39.99 per box of 100

I agree. Find a Walmart with ammo, like Mountain View, and get it there.

Thanks, I used to mail order my ammo by the cases when I was actively shooting.

But I've stopped shooting a few years ago, and now I just bring curious friends once a while to the range to increase the 2A voting block.

So, just need to get some ammo locally (and not too expensively since I like to pay for everything) before the range trip.

Thanks for the Big 5 info, I forgot that they also sell ammo, they may be a better choice than Walmart as I'm kind of far from a Walmart.

Big 5s prices kinda suck, WM is cheaper. Guess it depends how much you are buying if it’s worth the drive. WM is fairly completive on HG ammo but I find rifle ammo quite a bit cheaper online (aside from ZQ1 7.62 which isn’t a bad deal at WM)
