Sheriffs and PD Chiefs are politicians. They either get elected (sheriffs) or are chosen by a mayor or city council (so again, its all about who you know)

As far as LE unions, they know which party has the more juicy retirement pensions.

I dont hate cops but I am disgusted by public pensions for ANYBODY except somebody who was seriously injured in the line of duty (military, fire, LEO, EMTs...etc). Just doing your 20 years shouldnt mean a damn thing. But the libs know how to win voters- free stuff
