I know some companies have better reputations about keeping their serial number information in proper historical order but it's reasonable to believe that Colt might have mixed up some serial number records that they've been holding on to since 1907-ish.

      option number 2.)
your got a very early austro-hungarian clone that they were making in 1927 when they were flooding the gun show market (along with the 1907 beef jerky.)

I'm just messing with you option 2 is not an option at all.

What did the FFL put down when the pistol was DROSed to you by the executor of your dad's estate?

I was left a weapon by my dad when he passed. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is. From the look it would appear to be a 1902 Colt sportsman.

My issue is that the Colt 1902 was made from 1902 til 1907. The last serial number produce in 1907 was 10999. There were several made after that with serial numbers from 30000 to 30186.

Ok now here is my problem. The serial number on this weapon is in the 43000 range. see the photos attached.

When I check the Colt web page and check the serial number it comes back as either a 1921 built 1902 Military or a 1947 38 super.

As you can tell it is not a Military model, no thumb slide lock and the butt is round not square with a lanyard ring. And it is not a super based on the slide engraving. It fires 38 ACP and super + P would blow up the barrel.

If anyone can give me a hand figuring it out I would appreciate it.

        Thanks

There's no need to do a DROS for inheritance. You just send in the OPLAW form. But it is a 1902 Pocket hammer. Easily verified by the patent stamps and the serial matches with Colts records. They have many models listed since more than one model can have the same serial.

Sorry about your father. That's a neat old pocket hammer; keep it and remember him.
