    Winchester 62 question

I have a Winchester 62 passed down through family.
It seems like a pre-war version, but the high serial # makes it seem like a post-war version. Or a hybrid.
I'm very new to the gun world, and don't know much about it.

I'm not looking to sell it, and not really interested in the value - but interested in the history, and if there's a chance I could get it shooting again.

Can you tell me more about it?
    Seems like a pre-war style, but post-war serial #?
Pump handle length is < 6" - but it has no rings, so seems like a replacement anyway.
    Barrel is 23".

    Here are some pictures...

And, sorry for my ignorance, but that's why I'm here to start learning more about it.

If I go buy some .22 bullets, load them in the magazine, pump it once to put one in the ready position, which also auto-cocks it, and I then pull the trigger - it's likely this will explode in my face?
I don't need any details yet on that - will get to that later.
I just need to know if that's what will likely happen.
And no, that's not what I'm trying to accomplish.
But I'm a little impulsive - and with guns that's bad - so I'm trying to learn before doing here.

If you're that worried have a gunsmith give it a once over. Don't dry fire it, it will damage the firing pin and chamber. They are good guns but good pics and a serial number will get you more info. Also keep in mind this gun will fire if you hold down the trigger and pump the action it does not have a trigger disconnect.

It can be fun to do that but be careful if you do. Some old pump shotguns also have that slamfire type ability and it is something to be aware of.

Sorry about the pics not visible, they displayed okay for me.

        These might work better?

The two serial #'s do match.
The one to the front of the trigger does have a 'B' under it, though.
So I guess that answers my question on hybrid - nope not a hybrid.

If it passes a function test I'd fire it. I don't see anything to be concerned about. Just clean it up and lube it first.

Nice looking rifle. Clean it to ensure the bore is clear and load a single round, see if it will chamber and then fire it.

As to the foregrip not matching the correct style, perhaps the owner liked to older style grip better and swapped it way back when. Customizing a weapon is not something new after all.

They made different variants of the same rifle. Just clean it and shoot it I love mine , it was in way worse shape then yours and I re blued it and refinished the wood and it's a treasure for sure. I got mine when I was 7 years old I'm now 53. PS it's not a high dollar rifle by any means.
