Something similar happened to us. My wife and I were at work, its in the afternoon. I get a call from a friend who asked if I was monitoring the radio. I said no. She said a pursuit just ended in front of you house. Three home invasion suspects armed with hand guns bailed out of the stolen car they were in.

So I turn on the radio, and call my kid at home. She tells me the police helicopter is flying over the house telling people to stay inside and lock their doors. We keep the back door open for the dogs. So I tell her to call the dogs inside and lock the door. Soon as she locks the dogs inside she said, someone's in the front yard, there's a lot of yelling, they have a dog, I can hear it barking. I tell her to stay away from the doors and windows.

By the time I got home all three were in custody, the gun was recovered. The vehicle was a Compton stolen.

Your wife didn't chain the door and ask the Deputy if she was being detained? She need to spend more time on CalGuns so she can get the SOP down.
