Absolutely the correct things. First by noticing, then offering to help, then informing the range staff.

What I don't understand is how does he own these firearms without even knowing how to release the mag? Did he just take the HSC test, passed it, and bought the firearms without taking any intro to firearms classes?

i knew absolutely nothing when i bought my first two firearms. all i knew was from some "review" articles and basic tips i had read online (youtube sure helped though).

it was a bit intimidating taking my new gear to the range by myself but i knew i didnt want to be "that guy" and made sure to take it slow, and keep things pointed down range.

Thanks for the reinforcement. Like I said, this is new to me and I want to make sure I do that right thing and am not THAT guy.

The guy seemed really glad that I showed him how to use the Glock 19 and I strongly urged him to to get some help from the RO. I hope he listened.

You did good OP, better to be safe than sorry, I try to help any noob I run into at the range, any range for that matter, because I too was once a noob and got help from one person or another that was in the know.

As was said before, we are all RSOs and should remember that we were all noobs once.

I like the fact that the OP and the people he ran into were new to the gun scene, welcome to you all, now go out and be good stewards for our cause.
