Did three weapon shooting in Germany while serving in the Army. The Americans shot German weapons, and vice versa. It was gun shooting the HK93(?); G46 Machine gun; and PO8 (Luger). Fun stuff.

Nope, pre-2000 mags are exempt from that.

These days, I'm pretty sure you have to be "qualified" to shoot in a 3 gun match. Richmond Rod and Gun club offers a class on some Saturdays. Check their webpage for dates. I wouldn't worry about the bullet button or 10 round mags. If you practice, it won't add that much time. The real time killer is reloading shotguns.

Yes, you have to go to a practice so they are sure you'll be safe. They used to have them the Saturday before the match. Not sure if they require you to be a USPSA member also. You do NOT need to have a USPSA classification.

West end gun club has one on the 4th saturday of every month. Located off of the 15 and sierra in the lytle creek area. Check out wegc.org for more info.

3rd Sat at WEGC is LESA, which is basically 3 gun with different rules, but rifle not required.

4th Sat at WEGC is 3gun.


Here is what I have been using for a rifle, and what I will be using for the Oct. WEGC all steel 3gun match (pistol caliber or shotgun only).




They are featureless, so no bullet button. I run Kalifornia Kompliant which requires 10 round mags and bullet button or featureless rifles. These are limited because there is no magnification. Tac if for magnified optics.

The top AR is 5.56 and is great for ringing the steel at 240 yards for 3gun matches. The match last Sat was all rifle and we had 90 second par times (limits) on all stages. The long stage had 3 plates at 100 yards, 3 at 50, and larger steel targets from 125-200+ yards. I think it was 11 steel to be shot from two different boxes and 4 cardboard targets with one at 30+ yards being only a head with no shoot all around it (you better know your hold over). I ran it is 75 seconds and got 5 seconds penalties on the cardboard. Guys with scopes and 30 round mags ran out of time. Some were not zeroed properly or they had problems finding the steel, or just shot slower.

Kalifornia Tac was popular but there were only 3 of us in Kalifornia Limited. One guy DQ'd and I shot faster than the other guy, who I think was borrowing his friend's rifle who he shot with. Out of about 90 people, I only came in at 55, IIRC. There were a lot of great shooters.

I am much better at the longer distances with the AR than the CQB stages. Shotgun is slow to reload and I usually use my skeet gun (semi auto benelli super sport) and a skeet bag. My XD is tricked out for 3gun and runs very well. Pistol and longer range rifle is what I like. I can't wait to use the 9mm AR 15 for the all steel match. That match will cost $40 and you have to sign up online and you get a shirt made just for the match. Last match, I won a $30 box of BearCreek bullets, in the raffle.

At the top menu, choose activities and then 3gun or LESA for more info. Action pistol is pistol with one optional shotgun stage and IDPA is pistol only but is very fun and perfect if you have not competed before.
