    S&W 586

Do you guys have any current info on the quality these days. I have heard a few bad remarks. Was thinking about getting one. I found a NIB for 700$ out the door.

Awesome gun, even the newer models, if you don't care about the lock, the transfer bar, and the new process of bluing. I had one before and liked it a lot. No issues whatsoever with it. I sold it in hopes to find a pre-lock model, which was purely preference.

Go get it. And put it on another 90-day layaway. Better figure out quickly how to get comfy in the dog house OP!

There is nothing wrong with these guns. They shoot well and the finish is fantastic. It's like owning a Snake gun for 1/4 the price.

I have a 6" 586 and it's a fantastic gun. See if you can get it for $650, but settle for $700 if no budge.

Decent price if new in box. I'd take it if I were you. Of course you could (like orange said) offer $650 cash money and see if the seller says okay.
        Sorry, not sorry.

Own a 6" 586 & it's a great shooter. Hard to beat at that price.

i'd put the extra search-n-find time in to acquire an early pre-lock variant; personal preference.

buy it. Don't think you will be disappointed. got a new one about 2 years ago. It is great. Trigger is nice. Both me and my 16 year old son shoot it well. He likes it better than any of the semi autos we have. I bought a new one after a couple of on-line deal went flakey.

There's nothing wrong with the newer 586's. People (the internet) get hung up on the new locking gizmo and spread all these horror stories and how inferior they are to the older ones made high upon a mountain by master elves with magic metal parts.

I'd buy a new one in a second and I have an older 586.

Current production are great guns. The pre-lock models might be slightly better, but the only people who say the new ones suck are the pre-lock bigots (which is more of an emotional condition than a rational one).

                    Not magic metal, non-MIM metal.

I would have a gunsmith check it first. SW's new gun quality has not been stellar in recent years. Just my opinion. Some items to check:

                      barrel cylinder gap

                      barrel frame alignment

                      cylinder lockup

                      trigger pull

hammer centered in frame/side dragging on frame

                        Once you own a pre-lock 586 or 686.

You will understand why most folks think they are the cats meow.

                        They are really that good.
